CUSTOM SUB BOX COMPLETE! PICS HERE!

hey everyone i was sketchy at first...but with patience any of you can do it. all you need is some MDF, caulk/silicone, wood screws and the tools and time. i could have mounted the amp under it wtih plexi glass like derek but im fine with how it is. im adding another amp later and ZEX with a fire extinguisher. but hey it looks good you agree? if you have ANY questions or you think its stupid lemme know

I'm impressed dude......are you going to put grills over those, or do just plan to not use your trunk for storage?

yes. i ordered 2 12" grilles from crutchfield.com. 1 HUGE board of MDF cost me about 19.77$ at Lowes. Its 3/4in MDF board. To seal the box and make it air tight, i used bath/kitchen caulk, or you could use silicone. I have some pics of the building process , ill post those today so you can get more ideas. =) thanks for the compliments

wow, nicely done! so, i assume you don't have the spare tire in your trunk anymore, eh?

also, why did you go with such a damn thick MDF board, wouldn't like 1/2inch thick work just fine??

Yeah. But 3/4" was the thinnest they have. It worked just fine, the total weight of the thing amounts to just a little more than the spare. So im not losing "performance" etc etc. And yes i had to remove the spare tire, but there is a way to haev it relocated under the car...just more DIY work

How did you manage to get that floor board into the frickin' trunk? I have a piece on 1/2" plywood in there now that's not nearly that big and t I almost killed myself getting it in the trunk.

it was very simple actually. the old "floor board" that comes with your civic is kind of a hard posterboard type material. its brown with foam things on the bottom...the new floor that i made out of MDF is the exact size, so it has to fit or else how would they have gotten the stock floor in? another drawing...once again not much help but im just tryna help everyone out because this not only gives you your trunk back (for those of you who currently use GIGANTIC speaker boxes like i used to:tdown and now you have a cool custom look, and your trunk back. by adding speaker grilles which i will be as soon as they arrive, your speakers are protected. you can toss in yoru backpack, skis, or whatever. a fun and easy DIY project to impress your friensd. i sure impressed mine, or else they wouldnt be bugging me to make them a custom trunk

Crutchfield recomended 1.1cubic feet per sub, so i made each sub enclosure area roughly 1.1-1.3cubic ft. they sound great, just as good as they did when they were in my bandpass box. im very pleased with how things turned out, i thought i would compromise sound quality for looks, but i didnt

NICE!

just one question, are the tops of the subs level with the floorboard or no? cuz i want to do that, but i'd kinda like the subs to be level with the floorboard.. but i'd think that the magnet would touch the metal parts under the floorboard..

no, they are not level. it is screwed to the floorboard. and *no it doesnt move around, even when bumping hard. i filled the area under the box with this fabric filler stuff.....ill find out the real name, and the box is heavy enough not to move. no rattle no nothin!

Just as good as they did in your Bandpass.. Umm dude.. Bandpass enclosures offer very poor sound quality...but alot more SPL at 40-60Hz with sloppy uncontrolled muddy bass. no low end extension.. I hope you meant just as loud but much better

Cheers

well my friend has his subs in an open box..same setup as me. 2 12"s and his bass was hitting ...hard and scratchy. with my bandpass, bass was always hitting low and it just sounded quality. i highly doubt bandpass setups arent better than a open setup.....since a bandpass for 2 12's cost 150$ and a open box for 2 12's cost about 60-75$ thats just my opinion. but my custom trunk setup, is hitting just as hard, if not harder. and the bass isnt scratchy, but clean and hard.

Look at the materials involved in making the boxes, now compare the prices. That's why bandpasses cost more, more materials to make it.

the only extra material is plexi glass. which isnt expensive. and more wood...more of the price coems from the design, and the time to build.

to make it a sealed box... if it isn't air tight then you might hear some whistling cause of the subs moving air through the lil cracks
