Xm Radio Tuner
Hey everyone, just wondering if anybody is using Xm radio??
I'm considering getting xm radio soon, as its not available in Canada yet, but will be soon.
I was wondering what's the big difference between an aftermarket xm tuner box versus the pioneer brand one??? Will it make a big difference if I get the pioneer one??
I know the pioneer one's have the ip-bus connection where as the aftermarket ones don't. Is there any other advantages performance wise to getting the pioneer branded ones, or am I just spending extra money for nothing??
Here's the aftermarket one I'm looking at on ebay.

what are your thoughts??
oh, btw, should I stick with xm or use Sirius??

I have the Pioneer XM ready HU and the GEX-P910XM XM reciever and a Terk antenna.
It is a great system but, the prices are dropping fast on most of the units. Not even sure if the 910 is still available or not ??
Works great BTW

that aftermarket tuner is only half of the equipment you need, it was designed so shops wouldnt have to stock as much sku's. Once you purchase the tuner module, you need the adapter module to connect to your headunit. Pioneer has a unique one, sony has one, and so on.
I havent listened to sirus, but im very partial to my xm. Wouldnt give it up for anything.

If so, what's the difference between a tuner module, and adapter module.

I have seen 3rd party units to fit Pioneer (so they say) Not sure about the one in the link. It appears to have a couple of RCA jacks as the output, like a universal unit. Depending on the model of the HU the OEM Pioneer gives nice display options.
I must admit the price is very cheap. I would say buyer beware.

there is no reason to not purchase that unit. But, its only half of the package needed for a pioneer system. Heres a link to both of the pieces needed. The antenna is included in the universal part of the xm tuner. The universal piece has two rca outputs and a DIN cable output that connects to the brand specific adapter.

Alright, now the question is Xm or Sirius??
go with the direct connect always. much better sound quality. sirius will have better reception everywhere but xm will have better reception in a big city. with sirius it cuts out under over passes and thick tree cover. but with xm there are dead spots in the country. sirius has awesome mixes with great on air personalities and soon to come stern. even if you hate stern he will make em alot of money so they can invest in more and better services.
I got a pioneer DEH P8, with the proper Pioneer Tuner and Pioneer Antenna
it sounds really good and I recommend going that route, XM is availble in Canada, as long as your paying by credit card give XM 123 Fake st, they could really care less.
However understand that there are no terrestrial repeaters in Toronto, so reception downtown clicks in and out. Not that bad and will be corrected soon enough, theres even an XM satellite radio store at Avenue and Davenport but i dont think its open yet. xmradio.ca
If your anywhere north of bloor st XM works fantastic including all of the DVP/404 Gardiner, 427 and 401
the sat tuner is gonna run you about $180 cdn, + taxes at the border, I got them to decalre the value as $14 cdn and it slipped right through. The antenna set me back $50 also got it tax free.
