Fiberglass Trunk Lid
Fiberglass Trunk Lid
Hey guys,
I have a couple questions for you. I want to fiberglass the inside of my trunk lid, I need some help though. I need some ideas on how to hang it up there once you get it made. One idea was to take a piece of metal and rivet it to the place on the part of our trunk if you have it raised up it would be the top of it. Have a nut welded on the back side of the metal fiberglass the lid then bolt it through the inside of the glass. I dont know how this will hold though once the trunk is closed and your riding down the road. I dont want it bouncing up and down and smacking the top of the trunk everytime I hit a bump. If anyone else has done this how did you mount it?

you can simply remove the lid and place it in your garage on a soft towel.
then it will be facing the opposite direction, and you cna fiberglass directly on it. a permanent modification.
dont forget to foam the frame/skin gaps before you do it.

Hey whiterabbit good to see you again. Well I dont want it to be permanent. I want to be able to remove it if I have too. I also have now decided, im just going to be putting in a piece of plexiglass and thats it. So I just need to know how to mount the whole thing and then be able to put the plexi in?
I'd drill holes through the plexi where there is trunk frame.
will you be installing things such as amplifiers or signal processors onto the plexi? you can choose your hole locations based on that, so that whatever you put on the glass covers your mounting holes.
the only permanent modification to your trunk lid are the screwholes (say between six and eight or so?) and everything will be removable.
what do you plan to do about the borders of the plexiglass, where a flat sheet of glass wont match up to the surface of the trunk lid?

Well I will do a base mold of the trunk lid. Then im going to make a sort of stand out of mdf that will be routered out to hold the plexi-glass.Then I will stretch fleece over that mdf and then glass on top of that. No, amps or anything, im just going to have an engraving on it with leds lighting it up. This is the basic idea im going for, click on the link, linky
then the idea I posted above is perfect. once you pop off the fiberglass back shell, youll be able to drill two or four holes through the fiberglass part. youll never see the holes cause the plexi hides it.
to remove it, youd pop off the plexi panel, then pull the screws out.

its the best way I know of to hold your kickpanels and even subwoofer boxes in place, too
unfortunately, I dont know the best way aesthetically to hold the plexi in place. I only have two kinds of plexi experience.
#1 friction fit, rabbeted out frame of MDF, plexi always faces up and is nice and thin, so friction holds it ust fine. never have to worry about say, slamming a trunk lid shut.
#2 was a piece of inch thick plexiglass for the side of a subwoofer box. But it was four feet long, so putting holes and screws into it looked aesthetically good.
I dont think screws would look good in your case, and I dont think friction will be enough to hold it (actually, it might, but I really have my doubts.) So I'm not sure exactly how I would proceed.
Id jump on google images or the audio forums and start looking for people's installs using plexi on the trunk lid, see what they did, if noone else here has any ideas
