GPS Antenna Placement
I have a small mag mount GPS antenna on the center of the trunk nearest the rear window (basically in front of the 3rd brake light). I ran the wires from the cup holder area under the carpeting, under the rear seats, into the trunk and came out over the weather stripping of the back of the trunk. It is very clean, and work perfectly. I left about 6 feet of slack in case I want to move the GPS. Hope this helps.
CivicNavigation,
Your is sitting on your trunk lid outside of your car. Hmm and no water leak into the car. Thats a thought. Has anyone tried putting it up front on there dash. Like in the middle of your dash but all the way up front almost pressed up on the glass.

It is sitting on the trunk lid just in front of the third brake light. The Wire wraps right around the edge of the trunk and goes over the weather stripping. It doesn't leak at all. I actually have 2 wires running there, my XM radio and the GPS antenna. It has seen some heavy rain both driving and parked and no water has followed the wire into the trunk. The antenna will work placed on the dash all the way in the front. But it is obviously better to get it outside the vehicle.
it might, it might not. Check it out.
I put my GPS on my rear deck. I usually locked four to six satelites. only four are needed, so I was really fine. I have 19% quantum silver metal flake tint. (I assume the actual metal flake would do more to block signal than a standard tint).
Currently, my GPS antenna sits right on my dash, no tint blockage. I lock five to seven satelites at all times and loads faster. Realistically, its only a small performance benefit. And I really havent figgured out the best location on the dash yet. at the moment I have it in an aesthetic sock butting up against the passenger A-pillar. looks alright. I'd like it to look better if I can figgure out a better location up front.
my wire is running down under the dash entering the space between the dash and a-pillar. pops out easy enough. from there its easy to run into the center console, where it pops out to the USB hub under the drivers seat. once its by the E-brake it can be run under the carpet to the space.
if you ever come up with a good space up front to put your reciever, let me know. But I think your best bet aesthetically is on the rear deck. you can still get a full GPS lock without too many problems, even if you have heavy tint. and it will be far more invisible.

i put mine on the center of the dash, right up against the windshield. you can see it, but it has a good view out the dash. (between the defrosting vents or whatever they are).
i havent had a problem with it yet. drove from oklahoma to toronto this weekend, and it got me here without a hitch.
btw, what kind of gps units are you guys using? the gps antenna that came with my AVN5435 is small, looks like a satelite radio antenna, but smaller in dimensions. it doesnt look bad, thats why i put it on the dash, but some of you guys make it sound like its horrific looking.

I'll be getting my AVIC-D1 today. I'm not sure how big the antenna is cause I havent seen the antenna in person. I'm hoping its not too big. I guess when I get it i'll have to figure out where to put it. I really want it up on my dash, but if not it shall be the rear deck
you shouldn't put it where u have tint, you will get pretty bad refraction. When I had my carputer, what I did was take some good glue and reach up under the middle of the dash from the glove box (removed of course) and stuck it to the underside of the dash. It's only plastic just like the casing for the gps, so it had no adverse affects and it was concealed.
Yes, it's an Acura EL

I've had my Rikaline GPS receiver in 3 places as of this morning:
1) rear deck, right on top of the 3rd brake light. I have really really dark tint (metallic) so I could get 1 to 4 sats at most. It took FOREVER to lock - I'd be at my test destination by the time I picked up a lock on it.
2) trunk lid, right behind the 3rd brake light. This worked fabulous, instant lock as long as I wasn't underground. But like most people I started to worry about water getting in, even though it hadn't for 4 months.
3) Finally got myself a USB extension cable and ran it up the passenger side and up through the front passenger A pillar. So now it's sitting behind untinted glass, same instant lock that I was getting with the trunk lid placement, and now it doesn't stick out like it did on the trunk lid.

huwahahaha...
'hey, nobody (ex owner) think like i do?
i put my gps receiver on my passenger visor.....i ran the cable from the passenger visor to driver visor where i put the CF socket that I plug into my PDA..
so, basically...every time i want to use my GPS....i open up my passenger visor, take out the gps unit.......open up the MOONROOF lid.......lock the gps on the moonroof glass.....close the moonroof lid....and keep about 1 cm open for the cable to pass trough...
whaddya think? it can get very good signal with this way.....WAAS too....good thing also, when i don't use it, the gps unit is hidden over the passenger visor...therefore, i don't have to take it out of the car all the time...

sounds like a PITA. what if it's raining really hard? Or you have freezing rain in the winter and can't open the roof?
I think mine is the best solution. Clear view straight up, always available and concealed.

it doesn't really matter, IMO....since i don't really stick the suction cup into the glass...i just put it above the moonroof lid and close em......
the actual problem which started my idea is that...........my gps unit suck.
if i want to, i can just plug in the gps unit into the CF craddle and directly plug it straight into my PDA..
however, the stupid GPS unit won't get any signal when it's in vertical position -_-
i tried to stick the suction into the windshield...and believe it or not, i can only get about 2 signals......too weak!
i know.......lame GPS unit...LOL
