diy car speakerphone?
id like to install one in my car.
im guessing it would be a pretty simple install. just get nice sensetive mic (with wind screen) and run it from the cell phone headset port. then, from the same port, run a line to the head unit aux in. simple enough right??
i forsee a problem with feedback, im sure the mic will be able to hear the speakers, and because of cell phone delay, the person youre talking to will hear an echo of themselves. right? how can i avoid that? guess i could just turn the volume down. or place a speaker next to my ear that the mic wont be able to hear.

I had my hopes up. I was hoping that this would be a diy for an in-car megaphone hook up. What can I say? Its fun to annoy people when you are bored. Anyone ever seen the Tom Green segment where he says on a megaphone what he thinks that people are thinking as they walk down the street?
heres how to do the hands free phone in the car. its expensive, but its slick:
if you have a blue tooth phone it will be easier, as the adapters are universal, and all you need is your charger. But lets say you have a mid level phone and want to implement the speaker phone in the best way humanly possible.
so Im guessing you have a pioneer or alpine radio? many have cell mute wires in the back. so step one is to purchase the proprietary muting box. it senses when the cell phone radiation is being recieved by your phone and mutes or puts the radio on ATT when you recieve a call. thats step one.
step two is to purchase not a universal car adapter, but the one that is specific for your phone. there are multiple reasons for this:
I want speaker phone, external microphone, phone charging, AND no cables.
that last one means a cradle, and that means I need the proprietary kit. Yes, its worth the $150-$200. now I can install the cradle on the center console, I can put the mic on top of the rear view mirror, and put the speaker in the underdash under the steering column. Now, your kit will come with one of two options. RCA line level speaker out, or a speaker. I like the speaker better. if its line out, you cna hook that into your radio and play voice through your car speakers. Again, I prefer an independant audio system. Chances are it will be REALLY loud. no problem, just wrap some carpet or other space piece of whatever you have around around the speaker. with some tape, itll reduce the volume where you want it.
your mic cable runs behind the mirror support into the headliner; you never see it.
your speaker is in the underdash; you never see it.
the wiring to the cradle runs under the console; you never see it.
the power connection is hard wired in the center console; no cig ligter adapters, and you certainly never see it!
so you get into the car, what do you see? a little blip of a mic when you check the rear view, and an empty cradle down low.
how does it work? you get in the car, clip your phone into the cradle (just like you would at home at your desk) and you are DONE. the phone charges, when you recieve a call, the stereo mutes itself, unmutes itself when you hang up, you talk at your windshield as if noone were there, and while all this is going on, your phone continues to charge.
and there are no damn cables hanging around, there are no plugs to plug in and out, nothing.
and THAT is how you impliment a cell phone into a car. worth the two hundred bucks? you better believe it!

if you have blue tooth, its even sweeter. your phone could be at the bottom of your backpack, whne you key into the ignition, you hear your car stereo beep at you, letting you know the stereo has established a BT connection to your phone. even if its in the trunk. and you can pick up calls, all the rest even though your phone is in the bottom of your backpack in your trunk. minus phone charging, of course
finally, for those in in car computers, its just one step even sweeter. once you connect the phone to your computer, you can dial to the internet, dial numbers via touchscreen, recieve incoming calls alerted via touchscreen, screen, pick up and hangup via touchscreen.
aint technology grand?

how does that cell mute box work for the pioneers? Id love my system to shut off when I get calls. I called and asked pioneer and they told me that it dont work in North America. Im like but we have similar GSM technologies, they just sounded like they didnt know...
