man the music on that site is annoying and continuous.
linear acuators are really like $300? damn
You could also look at R/C parts, either their servos, especially the servos made for retracting landing gear, it's made to hold in one of two positions, compared to the proportional kind.
Also, sailboat sail winches are really torquey [but slow, relatively in r/c terms].
One last thing you can look at are Pneumatic retracts, similar to the first retract servos. A set could run you $200 easily.
McMaster also has some, you could try take a look.

I actually found one at http://www.mcmaster.com/ on page 909. It seems to be what I'm looking for.

Well I'm thinking of heaving one continous duty powered to push it out and keep it there when the HU is in use, and one intermittent duty to pull it back when leaving the car. is this correct reasoning?

No doubt. Let me elaborate what I want to do. I want to keep the face of our stock head unit and the drawer beneath it and put them back in to their place. Behind the face I'd keep, when not in use, the aftermarket head unit (which I'm thinking would be about 1inch back). When I'd get in the car, I'd take off the stock face, switch on one the actuators, and the head unit would move up. When about to leave the car I'd flip the other actuator on and it'd pull it back, and again cover with the stock face. I'll def make a DIY if all goes well.
This is in hope of getting a dvd-flip out head unit later in the summer, and preventing it from being stolen
.
Any input is appreciated.

hmm looking cheaper by the minute.
the DC push style continiouse duty would be the one that would push it out and hold it out as long as it had teh 12vdc?
and then a lil spring or something to pull it back cause that wont pul it back when powwerd down.. dcorrect?

The linear actuators that we bought go both directions when a 12v trigger is applied it opens all the way according to its extension max then when 12v is applied again it closes. I use one of the outputs of my viper to do it, but you can use a momentary toggle...and ludlem your right it was blitz I dont think there around anymore but they might be, I got out of the industry around 5 years ago!
