Iasca soundstage map anyone?
I never had a map. I just put on some headphones and listened for awhile. I dont have great phones, but for the purposes of tuning, its not critical until everything really starts to get focussed anyways.
my soundcard control is pretty weak, so I never know if I'm centered or not. So I played track 16 (nobody knows me), which I know has centered and focussed female vocals, and played with my fader till she was dead center. now my computer has been "calibrated".
I then went through the iasca and usac discs, and listened to each instrument, and wrote some notes on where the instrument was on the stage. it didnt matter that usac "wishing well" the bass guitar is *almost center* at 11.55, and vocals and kickdrum are dead center, (this was told to me earlier tonight, actually) in the phones they sounded dead center.
so I had a list of songs that said "iasca 7, vocal far far left, wood block inside or outside?" "usac 3, bass guitar, kickdrum, vocals center, trombone center right" "usac 2 harmonica left center or left center center or left left center" you get the idea.
I then took this out to my car, and knew where each instrument was supposed to be in general. helped a bunch.
and lemme know what YOU think about that wood block. is the girl on the inside of the block, or is the block on the inside of the girl? dont worry, theres no wrong answer
