Trunk Rattling!
Hi all
Well, I'm sort of a newbie when it comes to car stereos, so here it goes. I got a 2001 EX Coupe with some stereo mods. Installed a Sony Xplode CD Deck, Pioneer 6x9s (with dynomat) in the rear, and two 12" Sony Subs in a bandpass box powered by a 400W Amp. On certain songs, the trunk lid rattles like crazy . I was wondering, what steps I can take to reduce or eliminate this awful rattling?

Thanks!

Step 1 some sort of soft rubber license plate frame.. Step 2.. Tighten your trunk latch a little. step 3.. find out where the 2 extra screws go..step 4... Put a bandaid on the cut it your finger thatw as caused from the screw driver when you slipped.. step 5.. Rememeber to close the trunk lid.
Hope this helps..

It does work really well but if mechanical parts are bouncing off each other.. Dynamat or other sound deadeners won't do squat.. But after you tighten the trunk latch.. you should't get any more rattling.. Dynamat will still improve sound though as it will reduce flexing in the sheet metal and not allow for as much acoustical loss...

I have tightend the trunk latch, ( the one on the body, where my ground wire goes) I have it tightend so tight i have broken ratchet things ( forget what they are called, sorry) on it. now what 2 screws are you talking about, cause my trunk rattles so bad, you can't here bass outside, you hear trunk vibrations, but maybe my bazooka 12's are just that good

LJ,
By tightening the trunk lacth..I was not referring to tightening the bolts.. you can actually adjust the latch to make the trunk close down tighter, this will stop 70% of all the rattling.. Also.. for a good inexpensive fix.. by 10-12 feet of sound deadener and cover the trunk lid. go to http://www.b-quiet.com Cheapest stuff.. free shipping.. same as dynamat.. get the 12 sq foor roll or B-Quiet Extreme.. I think it's $25 shipped.. Stuff works wonders.

Gtek,
Step by step. quicki for you.. 1 open trunk, 2.. The trunk latch.. Take of the plastic cover.. Lossen fasteners. Move the latch assembly a wee tad higher up towards the trunk lid. Tighten fasteners. Close trunk.. Make sure it closes properly.. Unlck it with your key to open it.. if it takes too much force..it's a tad too tight.

No.. Move the latch up closer to the trunk lid..I'm talking about the part that does the clamping.. By moving up upwards it lessens the gap between the trunk Pin and the latch itself... Also the black rubber stoppers should be twisted so that they stick out a little further.

Also alot f the rattling may be coming from your rear deck.. the metal there is paper thin and there's nothing between the metal and the plastic...Take it all apart and add Weather stripping underneth the plastic.. find out what's actually rattling.. and be creative
there are two rubber stoppers on the trunk lid... you can twist them and that tightens the seal a lot. another thing i did was the latch dealy but that has been explained above.
the last thing i did was stuck a little weatherstripping to stop the rear plastic dash from hitting the glass... that was causing a prob...
after all that i still had a rattle in some songs but before i had bad rattles all the time...
I bought a roll of raammat from Rick (try searching) that stuff worked wonders!!! I took off the plastic rear deck and put it all over that and the bottom of the plastic... I also did in where the 3rd break light should be (I have an oem spoiler so I don’t have a bulb or anything in there and it was rattling)
I also did a layer under the rear dash so there was matting on both sides of the thin metal (I used 2 layers in some places). that killed just about all of the rattles and I was very happy.
now that I had done all that I had about 30 sq ft left of the roll and I didn't want it to go to waste so I was going to line the entire trunk. I ordered some taillights and when they came in, I took all the lining out of the trunk. I somehow conned my G/F to crawl in the trunk and start putting the mat everywhere while I did other things to the car. It was so cool to have her help me on my car!!! I bet a bunch of g/fs wouldn't do that but I haven't been able to get her to help me again since then. Maybe it was a once in a lifetime thing but whatever it was that was really cool.
any of you ladies have a b/f and want to surprise them then just offer to help them w/ their mods... they'll love it!!
