quick electrical question

I'll be installing a capacitor, and I need a reminder on a few things..

First, remove ground wire from the amp, then remove power wire from the battery. Connect power wire to + terminal of cap., then run a power wire from + of cap to + of the amp. Then, reconnect power wire back to battery, and finally ground both amp and capacitor.

Am I thinking correct here?

What the hell are ya'll talking about charging a cap? They charge instantly, the second you hook voltage up to them they're charged. There's no slow or quick charging procedures.

You should charge the cap first using a lamp or a resistor, or damage can occur to the capacitor.

Be CAREFUL!

...Sorry for not reading through the whole thread on what you are doing, but I did notice you are going to "pre-charge" a capacitor before installing it...a good way to get zapped if you ask me. Of course, the size of the capacitor will determine your reaction to it and that in turn will determine just how hard you hit your head on the raised hood!

Seriously...I'd recommend installation without precharging...

wouldn't that kill my battery though?

by the way, this is a used capacitor, I got it off someone I know.. so it has some charge left in it (I checked), it's just been sitting in my basement for the last 3 months

Pre-charge or not...

I presume you are installing this for your sound/video gear? It SHOULDN'T be a problem for your battery...are you installing this on a switched circuit? Any relays or anything to control it?...If it is on a switched circuit, just have your car running when you hit the switch for the first time...

I'm sorry, I don't know what a switched circuit is... I'm not very good with electrical, that's why I asked.

I don't have a relay, it's a very basic audio system. I just have 1 amp, and 2 subs running off it.

MegaHurtz is right...just do it...

...it sounds like it will be controlled using your amp's power - a switched circuit; turn the amp on/off controlling power through the cap...

A straight forward set up and not too elaborate -- sometimes the best way to go!

Enjoy,
