bandpass vs sealed
i would have to say sealed is much much louder. i do prefer how the bandpass box looks but it just isn't worth it. i covered two holes(my bandpass box has 4) and it sounds better. so ya get the sealed box and not the bandpass box. and the sealed pox is cheaper too i think

bandpass is also tuned to a certain range of frequency (ie, 40hz-60hz) so you'll never get all the sounds from it, and also bandpass tends to hide flaws of a sub(ie, blown subs). they make the tuned frequencies loud, but i do not recommend it
, go sealed or ported

Actually a sub in a bandpass is 3 DB louder than in a sealed. The sealed though will have better Sound Quallity (SQ) and hit the bass notes better. Bandpass will be boomy. I had a bandpass before, it was louder, but I like the way my subs sound in the sealed now.

Bandpasses are okay...if tuned properly.. but then again it the enclosure would have to be tunes "in car" using alot of test equipment for it to sound right.. basically at least 90-300 hours work (not kidding here either)... If you want louder.. Get a Ported enclosure which meets the reccomended dimensions from the manufacturer for best sound and 3db's louder then sealed.. want just SPL.. well then do a search on google for a program called WinISD and have fun desinging your own enclosure. Also note that all graphs generated with that program are outside of car and do not take cabin gain and other factors into consideration.

hell naw bandpass box is not louder... i know from experience... i had the same exact setup with different boxes. first was sealed vented box, and now i have a bandpass... the sealed was much louder and with bandpass you couldn't get all the notes.

the amount of ports and the length of the port is simply for tuning the frequency of the box, the rock u listen to much fall into the frequency that box is tuned at, usually 40-60hz
Lets put it this way
1. sealed enclosure= very accurate bass, plays very deep, plays plenty loud for just about any ones taste. only draw back is that selaed boxes generally require more power than ported, or bandpass.
2. ported enclosure= Generally about 3 db louder than a sealed enclosure with the same given power. very hard hitting bass, doesnt quite play as deep as sealed and can sound boomy at times if not tuned properly.
3. bandpass enclosure= The loudest of the 3 as long as the program material is in the general 45-65hz range. not accurate bass at all, doesnt play deep, very boomy, if you just want to pound your head off to rap or rock and have 0% sound quality than choose a bandpass.
Personally i never use anything but sealed enclosures, ported can be just as good or better if properly designed but ive just always been a sealed guy. bandpass i would never use and wouldnt recommend to anybody that cares at all about the quality not just the loudness of their bass.

Hey Mike,
You're statement on Ported enclosure's is for generic pre-tuned enclosures tuned to about 40Hz.. Depending on the tuning Ported generally offers even more low end extension than sealed. (tuned 35hz or down).. But tuning that low either requires small diameter ports(which means port noise ewww).. or Very impossible long ports.. Like rtuning a 2.5cu.ft enclosure to 28hz requires either 1 3"x 12.7" port. Or 1 4"x 21.3"... 6X ports would just be dang near impossible.. Unles your really creative, use 45degree angle joints and some flex tubing .

bandpass boxes...if u know what u are doing are excellent for competitions and that is about it...it is quite simple to blow a sub in an improper bandpass box and its also difficult to get the most out of one...however if u can do a good bandpass box u will get more output out of it in a certain frequency range which is why its good for competitions only, cuz everyday listening will suck as it will be peaky
