Where the spare used to live...
Hypothetically, what could fit in there? My installer is trying to convince me to put in an amp and a small sub...I'm not an SPL freak, and I don't wanna be a robbery target. The only condition I have for the setup is that the visible trunk floor remain as flat as possible because the car is a daily driver and the trunk gets used...guns, groceries, golf clubs, etc. If I were to amp, it'd have to be 5-channel for obvious reasons - 4 speakers and 1 amp. Please excuse my noob-ism on the topic; just thinking what I could do. Any suggestions?
what can you fit? anything.
if you have a budget, go for a 4 channel instead. you can run the rears off deck power, amp your fronts, and bridge the rears for your subwoofer. you will get just as much performance, and your amp options will open up to a much greater selection!
your installer definitely has the right idea though, with the spare tire install.

Why a larger selection of amps? What's bridging? How is perfromance unchanged? I gotta learn this stuff if I'm gonna drop some $$$ on it.

Bridging is a way to share power of two channels on one amp and drive that power to one load. Like running 1 sub off 2 channels (acting like 1 channel).
Performance would be the same because if you set up the sound system properly, you will only get a little bit of "fill" from your rear speakers. The vast majority of the sound should come from the front speakers, like front stage at a concert, and only a little filling sounds should come from the rears. This requires very little power to the rears. Power that most radios are capable of. SO, if you used the power of the radio to run the rear "fill" speakers, it frees up your options so you only need 3 more channels of amplification to run the rest of the system, frt right, frt left, and 1 sub. Hence the 4 channel amp, front rt off channel 1, front lt off channel 2, channels 3 and 4 bridged to make 1 channle for the sub. Bing, bang boom.
Check out the sticky post at the top of this forum that says, places to learn your audio, by Ludlamtheory.
the audio theory is that more sound should come from the front than the back. It's just a theory, so if you like music coming from the back, thats totally cool, but check it out.
home theater recievers play very little sound from your surrounds compared to the mains or center channel.
music is recorded in two channels, and they arent "front" and "back"
JL is starting to market lines of amplifiers that are more powerful in the front channels than the rear ones.
aaaaaaaaaanyways, the bottom line is, I'm suggesting that it might not be neccesary to amp your rear speakers. IF, rather than use a 5 channel amp (one channel of amplification per speaker in your car), you were to purchase a 4 channel amplifier, you could bridge the rear channels (effectively quadrupling the power going to the subwoofer as compared to the fronts). This would turn your four channel amp into a 3 channel amp, of sorts.
what this would do, is not leave you any means to power the rear speakers. But chances are your radio will have four channels of amplification anyways, albeit low power. thats great for the back!
So, if I were in your position, rather than look for a 5 channel amp (how many have you been able to find under $500 with a good reputation?) I would look for a 4 channel amp, which can be found for a comparative song in the same quality bracket, and explore the idea of having a stronger sound coming from the front.

forgot to mention, if you like having strong rear presence in music, then it would probbaly be best to either go for a 5 channel amp, or run two amplifiers, an 4 channel for highs, and a dedicated bass amp.

I'm confused about the smiley face? Are you saying that it makes you happy that music is not recorded in front and back channels? Thread
