setting gains
discussion: what is the best way to set gains using a test tone and dmm?
question: is it always okay to put signal thru the amp with no load on it, or do some amps not like that? (I have heard the latter to be true, doesn't make sense to me but maybe somebody knows)

I don't see how it good be harmful. I don't think manufacturers would recommend it if it were. Also, I'm sure plenty of manufacturers would jump at the chance to void warranty if there were any significant evidence of harm. It might be helpful to know more about WHY some people consider it bad. Nevertheless, I can't imagine playing a 0db signal through your amp is going to have any negative effects. I mean, without a speaker hooked up to your amp, the output is an open circuit - what's dangerous about that?
