im no audio expert but i have a few things in my civic so i guess i can try and help you out, im not a huge fan of mega bass either so i got a 400 watt 10' panasonic sub and 400 watt pyramid amp (i got a huge deal on the amp and sub so i cant really tell you to buy it or not but its a good example) also i got a panasonic 8400 Head Unit wich i think is the best one on the market, puts out more power per channel than most headunits (60x4) and it has every option you need, if your not planning on getting an amp to power your speakers get this Headunit.
hope i helped a bit.

Kenwood / Alpine headunit, With all three low output for front / mid / sub so that you can adjust each level from your headunit, and aleast 4volt pre outs.Quality components, Diamond audio, dyn audio, boston acoustics,ADS, you can do 61/2's in the doors and rears. and good high quality 10" or 12" JLW7 or kicker solobaric L7. JL audio for sound definitly, Kicker for spl. Amps Just make sure there handmade in the U.S.A. References include: JL Audio, UsAmps,Kicker,Earthquake,ADS,xtant..Not all of them are made in the usa but any handmade amp versus factory machine made will always be better.Another way to see whats really good out there is to check sites like this:
http://www.iasca.com/ Check and see whos winning with what equipment +
http://www.soundoff.org/ these are just some. Check the SQ+ standings and find whos on top.

i looked at some pics of some HU other members have in here...one that caught my eye was the alpine 9835. JL audio speakers or Eclipse sounds good from posts other members have left around the forums. A shop i went to today recommended me going with MB Quarts speakers if i want it to be crystal clear, but he never told me the prices, my guess is its pretty pricy for those. Also a 5 channel SoundStream Amp was mention at the shop. I tried search for it but not much luck. Any one know anything about the soundstream?

People can throw their personal preferances at you all day long. You need to grab a couple of your favorite cds that you know sound good and go to sterio shops. Any shop will let you listen to your own music on whatever deck you like with what ever speakers you like. It is all about you. If a shop will not let you, leave. You dont need to support a place like that. Go to specialty shops not places like Future Shop, Best Buy, etc. Specialty shops are more likely to be able to let you talk to an installer that can tell you what amp A and Sub B will do in you car.

Good Luck and have fun hunting.

jttegx has a spectacular aura aboutjttegx has a spectacular aura about
damn 2gs just like that?

if i was just looking for something nice and clean, nothing extreme, hes what i would look into for if i were in your position:

deck: an alpine or pioneer mp3 deck
front speakers: 6.5" component set (speakers, crossovers, tweeters)
rear speakers: 6x9 3ways or 2-ways
subwoofer: i suggest a 12" or 10" in a sealed enclosure since your not looking for "megabass"
sub amp: a mono block amp / Class-D to power the sub only.
speaker amp: 4-ch amp that can power all 4 car speakers (not the sub)
wires: everything monster cables. remote/speaker/power/ground/rca/misc. if not monster, than other reputable wire brands like lighting audio, rockford fosgate, stinger, JL, etc.

brands vary on you. so do some research and check out sites like www.crutchfield.com www.sounddomain.com etc

Personally, with those higher end choices I suggested, I would go for one of the following:

1. Front speaker only, no rear speakers.
2. Front speakers with stock rears run off the deck power.

Either way, I'd go for a mono amp for the sub(s) and a 2 channel for the fronts. I really think it is a waste to amp rear speakers. I also personally wouldn't buy from Crutchfield, they are pretty expensive. Check out sites like:
TheZeb.com, Onlinecarstereo.com, Ikesound, Sounddomain, hookedontronics

Edit: If you want to have a good system this is the way to go man! I promise you will love it so much! Plus DVD player (VRX745VD) has NO hide-away box so the whole thing is in your dash and no where else. Plus playing Xbox in your car with this set up costs only like $40 for a power inverter to power it. And I love playing Halo 2 in my car! With these subs youll never play in the house again!
My setup...
$1000 - Clarion VRX745VD
$600 - JL 500/1
$400 - JL HO210rW3v2

got HU from etronics.com (anyone getting one can get it here $970 shipped if price is same so rep me for good site)
Stock speakers sound amazing with this deck!

What I got not pictured
$50 - Rockford fosgate wiring kit
$30 - Stinger triple shielded RCA cable
$150 - Dynamat Xtreme Trunk kit + some extra sheets (2 layers on trunk lid, more sheets fir other spots waiting for warmer weather)
$35 - power inverter
$5 - light up switch for inverter so I could hide it behind dash
$150 X-box under seat

So total for all my stuff even the small things is...$2420 + 6% tax ($145) =
$2565

Sometimes Ebay is sketchy though. You really don't know if you are getting refurbished stuff or brand new. If you go used, that's very dangerous. Places like Ikesound or onlinecarstereo are usually either the same price or cheaper than ebay, more reputable and you get a warranty of some kind, usually around 1 year.

What J187 said....

My only suggestion is that you start with a good head unit. I've had everything from the Radio Shack Optima to top of the line Nak's. My preference though is Alpine. Hell, I don't even own one anymore as the wifey got me a Sirius setup from Kenwood, but I'm looking to get myself Alpine with iPod connections soon.

Save money by getting no rears, and spend it elsewhere.

If you want Sound quality then go with something like this (What I would do if I didnt go with DVD player):
$450 - Clarion ProAudio DXZ945MP (touchscreen!)
$400 - Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components
$110 - Infinity Kappa 62.5i speakers for rear
$560 - Infinity Kappa Perfect12 VQ Subwoofers wired to 2 ohms(2) These are the clearest subs Ive ever heard! Not the loudest but still they bump and super clear.
$150 - Dual 12" Subwoofer Box
$300 - Infinity Reference 610a Amplifier
$80 - Amp wiring kit and RCA cable
Total $2050 and you will have the nicest sounding speakers and subs in your area. Not to mention the coolest head unit thats not a DVD player.

All available on crutchfield.com and free shipping on purchases over $200. Plus the mounting hardware for the reciever is free and instructions for everything to be installed in your car, their master sheet, is free too. This will sound amazing. I had Kappa Perfect subs and they are the absolute most clear subs I've heard. I had it in a ported box for more volume but they hit every note perfectly. The Kappa Perfect VQ is probably the best sub for that kind of money!

2000 to spend on a system hmm thats a lot depending on your taste. My headunit alone cost me that much but its only personal preference. So with that being said.

Get 6.5' replacements either Alpine, Diamond Audio, Kicker, Infinity or JL Audio

Go for a single 10" woofer and a small amp to push it and you should even have money left over. but that depends on the head unit you choose.

What are your music tastes? The replies you've gotten to this point are preferences, or "hey this is what I have, get this". Most of the replies are for low end stuff, with some of the exception going tp things people have "heard" are good. Don't go on what people, especially shops tell you are "good stuff, cause I got it, or we sell it". Look at reviews of the products online. The only thing I can give you is much like J187, brands to look at. I won't go that far though, I'll suggest some headunit brands, as SQ or SPL will not really matter at the headunit that much, rather functionality, and ease of use. But no components, amps, or subs without exception to your music tastes.

Headunit brands: Pioneer, Nakamichi, Alpine, Eclipse

No offense, but on what I listed anything would sound good from rap to rock to techno to piano solos to classical music (my range of music -rap)

Clarion ProAudio DXZ945MP (touchscreen!)
Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components
Infinity Kappa 62.5i speakers for rear
Infinity Kappa Perfect12 VQ Subwoofers wired to 2 ohms(2)
Dual 12" Subwoofer Box
Infinity Reference 610a Amplifier

If you have heard any of these then you would know that yes these are all amazing items. If he had more $$$ I would suggest the top line JL everything mixed with some crossfire products but he gave a $2k limit so I tried to work out something good that will do anything.
Im not trying to argue with you but the setup I gave is killer and would sound amazing!

As for good brands:
Head unit: Clarion, Eclipse, Alpine (dont settle for cheap stuff)
Speakers: MB Quart, Infinity, JL Audio, Crossfire
Subs (for mix of SQ and SPL): JL Audio, Crossfire, Infinity, Eclipse (little too high $ for what u get but good still)
Amps: JL Audio, Crossfire, Infinity (only heard reviews but supposedly awesome amps from them now)
DVD Playing HU's: Clarion, Alpine [Kenwood and Pioneer are OK but get the better one if you are already spending this much]
Capacitors (<=1 fahrad): Lightning Audio sports amazingly low discharge times
Wiring: !Monster!, JL Audio(overpriced) (Rockford Fosgate + Streetwires are ok for power but not for signal)

Dude, no offense, but if he want's to cover the entire frequency range then he'll get different stuff. Caps are over rated. Infinity stuff is entry level to mid level stuff, and much, much better stuff can be bought for cheap.
