How To: Factory Radio to Amp to 6 X 9's

2001 Honda Civic EX

When I purchased my 2001 Civic, the original CD stereo was removed and replaced with an after market stereo. At the same time, a small Punch amp was installed to push some 6X9's. During the installation of the radio, the wiring harness had to be cut because of its incompatibility with the aftermarket radio. Anyhow, I want to leave the current setup (amp, 6x9), but install my original CD stereo instead of the one that is there now (aftermarket). I have purchased the wiring harness needed to plug to the radio, but then the issue with connecting the amp came up. Well, after doing some research in the forums, I now know that I will need a line converter to allow the use of the amp with my original CD stereo. I believe that all of the setups in this forum wich required a line converter had a different setup than mine. They typically used a line converter to connect to an amp which pushed speakers in a speaker box that is in the trunk.

My question is if I can use the same technique to have the amp push my 6X9's. If so, where would I need to tap into. The same wire going to my 6X9?

Any help is appreciated.

You should be perfectly fine running your 6x9s through a line level converter and an amp.

Just do the exact same as everyone else. Connect the rear speaker outputs to the line level convertor, then from the line level convertor to the amp, then the amp outputs to your rear speakers.

What amp do you have? It might be possible your amp has speaker level inputs, which could elminate the need for a convertor.

Ed,

Thank you for the prompt response. The amp is a Punch 160 A2.

Please let me know wether or not I need the line converter. Also, if you are aware of any other issues that may arise during a setup like this, let me know.

Again, thanks for your info.

It may have hi level inputs, which would mean you need to purchase nothing. If it doesn't though, you can always go with the hi-level, or line out convertor and work just fine. Tap into the accessory wire for your remote wire and you're all set.
