Help W/ New System

Can someone please help me put together a respectable system to listen to stuff like rage against the machine, metallica, prodigy... right now, i have the stock 02 ex coupe system and my main complaint is i have no bass and i can't play mp3's. I was thinking of getting an alpine 9831 and a subwoofer.

Considering how i don't want terribly loud bass (quality, not quantity) should i get a 12" sub or will a 10" do the job?

Should i get some sub-in-a-tube like what i saw in CC? It seems as though no one on this board has these so i'm wondering why.

If that's no good, what do you think of a jl w3v2? Can i get a cheaper brand that will do the same thing (image dynamics etc)?

Cost is a factor here (no more than $400), as is trunk space. Please ask if you need more info. Thanks.

1) a 10" bass will generaly be cleaner but since you want to save trunk space I would go with a 12" because you will be wanting a bit of a kick from it.

2) I dont know about those sub-in-a-tube subs. I think if you don't know better it will probably sound okay for you.

3) Image Dynamic subs aren't inexpensive. Well, maybe the idqs but you probably want to get an IDMAX if you go ID.

My recomendation. Get one of those sub in a box things. And spend the rest on a realy decent head unit. Then in the long term replace the sub. And get a good sub/amp setup.

I'd say a JL 10w3 would be a good choice. Its an excellent sub.

Generally the smaller drivers are better at the bass drum type sounds.

if your listening to rock, id probably go with a 10", need sometin thats faster then a 12", depending on which songs you might find that 12 has trouble keeping up.

rock it with a ID v.3! 10" in a ported box will have plenty of punch to it for you type of music. I've got a MBquart 12" and it has trouble keeping up with some of the metallica.
