preamp output voltage on headunits....

does the voltage really matter a whole lot? like if i had one with 2 volt preamp outputs and i had one with 5 volt preamp outputs, would i really be able to tell a big difference?

depends on the amp you hook it to. If the amp can use the higher voltage, you will get a cleaner signal. My deck has 6v preouts, but there's no way that even matters to the small amp I have.

Yes, you do have to set the amp gain to try and match the preout level. I haven't done this, but that's why it's there.

The higher the output voltage on a deck ..... the less susceptable the signal is to interference. If your system is fine at 2v, then 5v won't make any difference. More often than not though an interference problem is the result of a bad ground or placing the RCA by the amp power wire.

if your getting interference, and your RCAs are run properly (not beside your power wire), try using double shielded RCAs, or a ground loop isolator. that should get rid of any alternator buzzes or other things......just something to remember if u do get an amp

I still don't understand how to properly set the amp gain.

The idea is to adjust the amp for the HU and speaker that you are powering. Turn the gain all the way down, turn the HU up to 85% of the max volume, and then turn the gain up till the speaker distorts. Now the amp is set so that the speaker maxes out at that 85% of max volume on the HU.

Just do was regjoe says to set your gains. I went from a HU with 2.4 volt outputs to one with 5 volts and it was a huge difference, then a few yrs later went to 8 volt outs and it wasn't nearly as noticeable. The gains on my amps are barely turned up at all. Higher output voltage helps get you a cleaner sound, but there are also so many other variables involved that will equally help the overall quality of the sound you get (amps, speakers, install, etc..)
