XM or Sirius
Well since my deck has died completely, I now have to buy a new one. I have been without music for a week now, and I am completely insane without music in my car. One of the things that I will need with this new deck is an AUX input for my iPod. Secondly I want CD text, and anymore than that is kinda up in the air. I want a deck that can handle satellite radio, but dont know which one though. The guy at Best Buy was telling me about Sirius and them having NFL now, which would be nice. The programing on both seems to be fairly equal. I listen mostly to techno, some hip-hop, a little bit of rock. Tell me about sound quality, what you like about it, what you dont like about it, the programming, and what not. If you have it and dont like it anymore, tell me that too. If you do not have XM or Sirius, do not bother to respond. Thanks
I have XM on my Alpine, and I absolutely LOVE it. I have no SQ issues, it sounds just like a CD. Havok2k1 has Sirius in his car and it's the same, no quality issues.
If you have an iPod with a dock connector, Alpine has a dock system for it that allows you to control your iPod from the HU.
If you have the iPod with dock connector, then I would seriously consider and Alpine unit. www.alpine1.com for more info.

I have same deck as Alpine Civic and we're stuck with XM ready decks, but I think I rather have Sirius. From what I understand XM has no satellites over the US (only ground repeaters). Sirius has 2. I have Sirius at home with my cable TV and love it too.
just my opinion, i have both in my car right now and i prefer sirius period. i think they have a better selection of music, the nfl thing is great too but i'm usually at work all day on sunday so i only get to watch the sunday night game.

I have been enjoying XM for a while. As long as you don't use FM modulation and get a PIE adapter or something similar the sound is excellent. I have no complaints. I've had both and I prefer XM's programming. The Alpine setup is sweet, especially if you own an iPOD.

Just buy a new alpine deck, they've picked up sirius now too AND have an i-pod controller. I got xm so i could hear some house music - not a whole lot on there, but its better then nothing. Most of what I've heard is that Sirius's programming is better, although i havent heard too much of it as we use xm as our feeds at work. I'll probably get it again, that is if the direct tuner by terk is compatible with my avic-n1 (whenever that comes in). All in all, its nice to have no commercials and so many channels, even if they're not ALWAYS playing what you want to hear.
Oh, and sirius has 3 satellites (of which 2 are only used at the same time) and xm has 2, but xm has many more repeaters, so it drops less (at least in my shop).

Satelite radio is the best invention yet and anyone who thinks that the sound quality is not far better than fm radio is a complete moron. it is almost cd quality, commercial free, and you can drive from one east coast to west coast and never lose the signal, unless your in some mountains, sometimes i lose signal then but it is only for a split second.
i have xm ready pioneer head unit with a pioneer digital tuner and the xm antena and it is awsome...love it! sirius is also nice. i had that in my expedition i rented from hertz on the way down to NC to see my sis, both are very similar, sirius carries more sports stuff though. music genre is extremely similar.

NOTE:
If you go with an Alpine with the Ipod module - your ipod MUST be 4th gen or newer, 3rd generation won't work with it.
I have both Sirus and my Ipod in my '01 - I basically share the single Aux in depending on what source I want to listen too.
The sound quality is OK - certainly not CD quality but not it's not bad. The NFL package makes it worth it. I don't think I'd have bought it if it didn't have that.

Also, Alpine makes a splitter, basically allowing you to use two input sources. I was considering this before realizing how expensive it was going to be to have to upgrade my deck, ipod, and purchase the 3 modules (splitter, ipod, and sirius).

Well someone woke up my sleeping thread. I wont be getting either in my car now. Reason being is now that Dish Network broadcast's Sirius' music stream on the dish, why bother in my car now. I think it would be nice in the car, but since I have it at home now, I love it. I have enough music on my iPod and CD's to do just fine with. I love the Sirius channels. The decade channels are great, and they have some great techno stations too.

I love Sirus on Dish too. I've heard XM and I have an Alpine IVA-D900 which is setup for XM already, but I really like Sirius' "The Beat". I know that XM has "BPM" but I don't like it as much. A sirius dealer told a friend of mine that he could make siruis come up on the screen the same way that XM does on my unit, but I don't think Sirius uses AI-NET and I don't want some cheese AI-NET to RCA adapter.

I was talking to a friend, and he tried to tell me that pioneer has similar plans. Now i dont really know how much I believe that, since pioneer is coming out with the avic-n2 which features some sort of traffic nav that takes info from xm and applies it to your nav route and helps you avoid jams for $13 a month (including the regular xm channels and such). Anyway, I think that sirius' downfall has always been not so great brand backing - kenwood, panasonic and clarion (yes i know clarions are good decks, but they're fugly, so are kenwoods). All the sirius plug and play units are still pretty fugly too, but I think alpine's backing will help out some.
I really thought xm was going to kill sirius when they went commercial free, but i think sirius has reacted well with their programming - the NFL, Howard Stearn, Eminem. Im sure Howard Stearn will bring in more new listeners next year when he goes on then sirius currently has. Nearly every review of both services head to head gives both programing and sq to sirius, although i know from experience that sirius is more prone to drops (i cant get sirius to come in inside my shop, xm is no problem normally). Not to mention, sirius has some great offers - free internet streaming with a subscription (xm charges), and lifetime subscriptions.
I guess i just think that sirius is poised to take a big market share now, hell, if i had some extra cash, i would definitaly put a couple hundred into their stock, its sitting at under $7 and xm is at $37, and although i dont think sirius will pass xm anytime soon, i do think subscriptions will catch up considerably.
