Reconditioning a sub?

I think that I blew my 12" Kicker solo baric l5. I've never blown a sub before so I'm not 100% sure what's wrong.

It still hits, but there is a hollow rattling sound that comes from the center of the sub when it hits.

Like an idiot while waiting to have my box and trunk rebuilt for this new sub set up, I didn't have the amp bolted down. I was coming back to work from school and all of a sudden it just stopped hitting. I popped the trunk when i got to work and the amp slid across the trunk and the ground wire was pulled loose. The amp was in protection mode. I pulled the fuses, replaced the ground wire and turned it back on when I heard the rattling.

A guy i work with thinks that the ground wire may have somehow touched something and sent a surge through the amp and thus blew the sub.

Can I have the sub fixed or should I just toss it and save for a new one?

You can have the sub fixed but it will be costly nad you can probably not do it yourself.

Your rattling is probably caused from the voice coils having come unwound and the loose wire is rattling around inside the magnet.

If that is the case, you will need a new diaphragm assembly consisting of among other parts, a new cone and voice coil(s). Replacing it is a bit of an art, it has to be perfect otherwise it will be crooked and will distort causing the subs to go bad very quickly.

For the trouble that it's worth, sorry to say, but it may be easier just to buy a new one...

Contact Kicker about their trade-in program. You can trade in a blown Kicker sub, and get some credit back when you purchase from them directly.

Turning in a blown Kicker 2ohm round Solobaric 10", I could upgrade to the 04S10L72 for $262.50 each. CarDomain has the Kicker 04S10L72 for $349.95, so my blown Kicker is basically worth $87.45. Not bad for a nice paperweight.

Thanks, I called Kicker today. I am sending them my 12" solo baric L5, and they are sending me another L5 for 93.00.
