Where can I find Eclipse Head Units?
I've been looking for some good online dealers that sell Eclipse head units but can't find any. Where can I buy an eclipse head unit online? I would go to my local shop but I think I'll pay a bit more there.

Tweeter. Tweeter got some nice eclipse head unit. I know the price is kinda up there but IMO its worth it. I bought a DVD player last year before they came out with the new model for only 1250. I think the service at Tweeter is a lot better than any other local shops.
Hmmmm - I guess I'll have to go down to my local shop because I know they have them there. I was ordering all my parts online and it would have just been easier to get it all online. I have to go there anyway - I'll just pick up one there (if the price is right).

i wouldnt want to go without the eclipse warranty, since they have that one year theft warranty that gives you a new deck if its stolen within the first year.
eclipse is a rare one online. starting in 2002 (I dont know if its held up) they started a price war for radio's. MP3 radios going for literally $200 RETAIL, their flagship radio dropped from $800 retail to $500 retail!
when we first got the pricebooks, our manager looked at it and said "no, no, no, give me a pen" marked up every price from $25 to $150, said theres no way we would sell the 8 series eclipse for $500.
so you may find that retail pricing for eclipse radio's, even current model years, arent bad at all!

I called and asked for the 5444 - the quoted me at $499 - A bit high for my budget so I think I'm going to go with a 3 series unit. I'm getting everything installed there and possibly two amps from there so maybe they'll give a break on the parts or the install. If not I'll get a 3 series HU.

You can only get Eclipse at an actual Eclipse dealer. Hard to find online unless they are used. If you are interested in a used model, I know somebody who is selling one. I believe the model # is 5301. If you are interested, PM me and I will get a price and better details for you.

That said, the 5444 is worth the cash. VERY good HU, and having 5v pre-outs is niiiiice.
There should be some bargaining room on the prices overall...my local dealer cut me some pretty decent discounts for going entirely Eclipse. I know they certainly weren't losing money on the deal, so see what your dealer can do for you if you're going to be buying a bunch of gear.

Hmmm - when I called I only called with the intention of getting prices - I'm going down to see if they can cut me a good deal since I will be buying the HU, sub amp, and 2-channel comp amp, plus install and such there. If they can't give me a great deal on the equipment I'm sure they can shave off some $$$ on the install. It will probably still be too expensive though. Even if they come down to $400 or perhaps $350 if I'm really lucky - I think the 3 series will be fine for my use. I'll have to go in to hear the audible difference between the too and then decide. If it's that much of a jump then I'll probably get it but if the 3 series is comparable then I'll just get that since I'm still on a budget.
5444 Pricing...
Yeah, I've seen it listed lower in a number of reviews, but I think it is probably all what the market will bear. Big city = more competition = more possible sales = better pricing.
Smaller metro area like mine, things are a bit tighter; only one high-end dealer in the entire area. I know they aren't moving nearly the volume of the Best Buy down the street (LOTS of Sony Xplode people out here thanks to Best Buy [groan]), so I'd imagine their dealer costs aren't that great compared to a high-volume dealer.
I got more than enough off the rest of my system to make up the difference, so I'm not too worried.
Good point though...if your market calls for it, push them lower.

^I live in the suburbs so competition isn't too high. We're also dominated with Best Buy and Circuit City so everyone neaer me has the same stuff. The closest high-end dealer near me is around 20 miles away. There are some local shops around 5 miles away but they're usually flooded with sony, panasonic, etc... The high-end dealer near me does lots of competition type stuff and aren't concearned with big brand names or flashy lights/looks. They're much more geared toward the mobile audiophile and their work and stock show that.
Its too bad that they're the only local shop near me that carry's Eclipse - eclipse dealers are extremely rare near me so it'll be hard to drive the price down. I just hope the install and other equip will bring it down.

Alpine deck...
The Alpine CDA-9833 is probably the closest HU to the 5444 in price and features. I'd looked at it as an option as well.
The power from the deck is higher (Alpine's V-Drive feature), but if you're running amps that's not an issue. I think the Alpine pre-outs are 4 volts vs. 5 volts for the Eclipse. Also, if I remember correctly, the Alpine's time-alignment stuff was a bit more flexible. Most other features were pretty similar. You can view Alpine's manuals at their website for details...
I listened to both for quite awhile before buying. With both decks set flat, the Eclipse seemed to have a smoother mid-range, while the Alpine seemed to have a slightly exaggerated low and high response. With a few EQ tweaks, they'd probably be really close.
Eclipse's 3-year warranty was a big bonus (plus the 1-year anti-theft warranty).
Either deck should give you great results.

I was looking for an Eclipse headunit for my dad so I went up there, they dont carry them anymore, BUT, some stores have a couple left that you can get killer deals on.
I ended up buying a Eclipse 3413 yesterday for him, normally $200, I got it for $138. Its being transfered to the store now so I can have it by his birthday...Hope he likes it, he wanted something looking the closest to stock, haha.
