I don't know... I only had about 1/4" or so of play when I put my speakers in. And I wouldn't want my speakers much closer to the window. I ended up snipping out that plastic rim on the door panel, which gave me another 1/4" - 3/8" (it was touching, or at least very, very close to, the speaker itself), but I wouldn't want the speaker much closer to that plastic, either.

So while I might be able to cram a deeper speaker in there, I don't know that I'd be comfortable doing so it it were more than 1/4" or so deeper.

I'd be especially wary of the Momos, since they are, I believe, pretty deep. Has anyone here successfully installed them in the front? (Without cutting a hole in the door panel or otherwise seriously modding the doors...)

oh definitely, the biggest issue with installing speakers in teh door isnt depth related issues, its magnet related ones! aftermarket magnets for the most part are jsut too huge to get through the stock opening! thus the minor snipping of sheet metal

the spacer takes care fo the rest.

the Koda fits easily into our doors, and is 3 inches deep. the magnet is darn near the size of the basket, and it still fits! add a 1" spacer, and even the doorpanel fits back on without cutting out the ring! (potentially)

and, by doing what youve suggested, and cutting the ring in the doorpanel, chances are we actually can fit speakers in our doors like the tangband 6, the DD w6.5, and other very deep speakers!

if you needed to cut your doorpanel and needed a spacer, only had 1/4 inch of space behind the speaker, you must have had pretty deep speakers! but you still got them in there, right?

Yeah, I got them in there. But they weren't particularly deep (JL VRs -- can't remember the exact depth but I believe it was slightly over 2.5", like 2 5/8 maybe). I used a 7/8" spacer (3/4" MDF + 1/8" random carpet-like material when I saw the 3/4" was only just barely enough). That plastic ring was definitely very, very close to the speaker, if not touching it...

On the other hand, I was playing it safe. So, I might actually have up to another 1/2"+ extra space in there... but you'd have to be pretty damn exact to make it work.

Of course, if you don't mind not being able to roll the windows down all the way, you have a ton of space.

This is on a 2004 Civic EX sedan, by the way. It may be slightly different will other models/years...

Oh, and magnet-diameter-wise, I also don't see a problem, as long as you are willing to cut some metal. I didn't even have to cut anything to fit my VRs in there (though it was a very close fit).

Their Magma subs are good as well. I believe they had one of the SPL records a while back. Good woofer, too bad they are hard as ish to find anymore.

if thats the breakdown, get hte alpine, the infinities dont have anything you want. the tweeter is harsh, and the midrange has no midbass capabilities. it does nothing you want.

Well I have no idea what i want to do now I have completely changed my choices now. Add these to my choices Focal 165A Access Line, MB QUART RCE 216, JL Audio VR650-CSi, Boston Acoustics RC620, DIAMOND AUDIO M661. I hate speaker shopping. post your thoughts and opinions.

I heard that JL speakers sucks, but subs are pretty nice.
MB, BA, and DA, I am not sure yet, but I will do some research on that.
Focal, unless you go with Utopia, there's nothing you gain.

I've got JL VR650-CSi up front, and love them. But I can't compare them to anything but stock (stock with no amp, I might add). So I have no idea how they compare to the others you've listed.

Not sure how much that helps, but there it is...

Type Xs all the way man!!!

Another thing to consider is what amp and how much power your giving the speakers...this might change your decision.

I think Alpine might be coming out with new Type Xs soon because they are on sale everywhere...but who knows if they will be better.

trhe VR's are awesome speakers, no doubt. smooth and warm, but not as smooth as the XR series. which can be a good thing! especailly if your type of music is death metal or hard rock.

the midbass is extreemely present, and the tweet is very capable, if we cant define it as SQ competition world champion.

the set jsut doesnt have teh raw sound the rockford set or earthquake set would have, along with those set's powerhandling capabilities to absolutely scream.

I love the VR set, I always reccommend it to ballad lovers, or jazz lovers as the ideal value set to get.

I was looking at thoses Earthquakes you mentioned. What is a good good to drive a pair of those? Perferably an amp that is a great deal like the speakers.

The VRs are definitely nice for jazz (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock), although with many songs I can hear the distance between the woofers and tweeters (I mounted my tweeters on the sail panel). This would be a problem with any components, though, because of the way I installed them.

For electronic music (D:Fuse, Mark Farina, Orbital, Beatless, Laika, Faithless, Tricky, etc.) and hip hop (People Under the Stairs, Talib Kweli) they sound very good. I just wish my door was better rattle-proofed. I picked up a sub, though, and I'm going to try cutting the low end to the VRs and see what happens...

Rock/alternative (U2, REM, Radiohead) sounds good on them as well, though there is a bit too much high end. I believe this is probably the install again. Anyway, if I turn the treble down a notch on the HU (I already have the crossovers set at -3dB for the tweeters) it fixes it.

Opera (Placido Domingo) sounds beautiful! I only occassionally listen to opera, but I was blasting it for a while after I installed my system because it sounds so damn good!

Johnny Cash sounds good on them as well.

Not sure how they fare for punk, metal, or other music that I rarely listen to. I mostly listen to electronic music, and they work really well for that, IMHO.

harv, the 5.25's fit easily into the doors, the 6.5's fit too, just a bit more work than the 5's. no more or less than most of us here have already done, and certainly no less than youd have to do if you got some of the larger speakers already on your list, so you are forewarned about that one, magnet is big 1 inch spacer and youd be set, however.

as far as power, you can play them off the deck, although its a little on hte low side for power. they are, as stated before, *virtually* unblowable. I have no doubts they can handle 250 rms if you decide to feed them that much.

realistically, 50 rms per side for value, or 100 rms per side if you want ear shattering sound.

earthquake makes an 85x2 amplifier (PH2.3, PH300.1, i cant keep up with their name changes anymore, both those are 85x2) that can be had for very cheap on ebay, I reccommend winkasettie, he has been as reliable as scala1for earthquake amplifiers. If he has any earthquake 2.5's, I would reccommend those, as they are ~115 rms per channel, two channel, and winkasetties will probbaly let you have one for the neighborhood of $200, maybe $200 shipped, even.

you can find the 2.3 for about $100 before shipping on ebay all the time.

I can say that the new SPX-177R is better than SPX-177A, but is in no way comparable to the old SPX-F17M/T nor the SPX-Z18T/15M if you read the Q factors.
Anyway, SPX-177R has integrated passive time correction, that may help in staging, but not SQ....

although the mounting depth is 3" i don't think that would fit in the doors. actually i think the polk's are deeper at 3 1/4". where would be a cheap place to get some prefab kick panels?

think JL, slightly muddier, but not noticibly so, a CRAPload louder with even mroe midbass capabilities. they can handle tons of power, but dont need it (probbaly need more than deck power, though, to really realize their potential) and can play as sweet or as rugged as you want them to

and I think the new ones are supposed to be improved, depending on whether or not they fixed the surround issues, I think they did.
