Big trouble on Stereo
Big trouble on Stereo
I've been working on this since I got my car last year(when I first got my new Vic), and eventually broke my HU's ****(weired?):
1) I got a CDA-7893, old one from my previous totalled Prelude......Wired everything correctly, I was using Alpine SPX-177A front and SPX-137A in rear. Can't set the sound stage no matter what, even with Time Correction and XO's phase correction!
2) Then switched to CDA-9815 several months later and sold my 7893 to my friend. Again, can't set sound stage even at 2-way or 3-way(active) mode!
3) Then switched my front speaker to SPX-F17M(got 2), sold my old SPX-137A and SPX-177A. Sound a lot better, but still, can't set sound stage! Later the **** was broken(2 months, i guess).
4) Then got a DVA-7996 with PXA-H600 phase processor. Also got a pair of 3-way passive XO for SPX-F17T(3-way) from ebay, then bought kick panel, 5" mid (class matched to my woofer) and installed. Still, can't set sound stage!
5) Now going back to 2-way, tweeter and 6.5" in kick panel. A little better, but still, can't get the sound focused.
What's wrong with it?
I measured the distance of all speakers, even do bi-amp to have 4 channel time correction in the front, but still can't get what I want(stage centered at middle, height, width). Adding phase processor to assist automatic time correction, still don't get it. Phase correction on the XO doesn't work, or at least, sometimes making things worse).
Sound seems to come from the right all the time, especially high frequency. Mids are louder on left side, but a lot clearer on the right side. Left high seems diminished. Right high always "pop out" before the mid(ie. Sun becomes "Sa-un"). What's the correct settings of the time correction anyway? I saw some ppl saying that the passenger side 1.5ms delay with no delay on the left, it makes some sense since the left speaker's angle is at it's extreme, which adds distance by itself. But what I found out is this:
If I delay the sound of the left front, the center image(I use IASCA SQ disc) begins to shift to the right but focus at the right side. If I delay the sound of the right front, the center image stretchs out and lost focus.
I need some advise please. Thanks...

And the IASCA disc also have the "polarity check track"(track 4, I guess). The "in phase" actually sounds out of phase and the "out of phase" sounds in phase but lost low frequency. What's wrong?
I am sure that the speakers are not inversely wired because I wired it 2 times and used multimeter to check for wire end(when I first found out it doesn't sound right).

do you still have rear speakers?
I jsut recently set up my mids for new kickpanels in my car.
Somehow, with the speakers farther forward than Qlogic kicks, I was able to keep the speakers in phase and imaging well.
When I started to rebuild, i pushed ht espeakers ALL the way back, even fartherback than the Qlogic kicks! I was hoping to enhance stage depth, and I am still working on them (jsut today I stuffed them with the polyfill)
when i was imaging them, I had the BIGGEST problems aquiring a center image! My goal was not to have to use time correct. I even had the driver speakers all the way away and the passenger speaker COMPLETLEY in phase, it still imaged to the right!
then I tried flipping the polarity of the passenger speaker.... it was almost perfect immediately! ive been tweaking it bit by bit, but the center image was cake with the passenger speaker out of phse!
So I reccommend trying that, wiring the passenger side out of phase then retuning the TC to see if you cna better aquire a center image.
That is, of course, if you dont have rear speakers messing up your imaging!

here is what I asked on the 29th:
"I have one last concern, IASCA disc has a track that goes "my voice is in phase, and should sound clear, be placed in teh center of the soundstage....... my voice is now out of phase, and should be difficult to locate....."
before with both speakers wired in phase, there was a HUGE difference between the in phase and out of phase. now, theres not much difference at all!
is this something I need to worry about?"
the reply I recieved two hours later:
"nope"

Just did a test drive, with the XO's input end reversed, but seem like failed. Tomorrow I will try to see if the woofer behind XO out of phase will work.
Had an interesting experience. When I was in 3-way, I switched both tweets and the DRIVER's side mid out of phase. It sounds wide(cuz the left side becomes farther away), but the human voice was out in front of the music(music in long distance, with human voice almost at the center console). Weired?
