Ludlam is correct. Airbag removal is not necessary. Our airbags come out of the top(the panel says airbag on it or something if I'm remembering correctly). Unless you have a really deep screen, you won't have to remove the airbag.
I want to do the same thing with my car. Because there is no DIY I'm going to buy that part of the dash board from a junk yard and try some experimenting before doing the actual install for a couple of reasons:
1) Practice how difficult it might be to cut that dash. Determine which tools work better, and how cleanly they cut.
2) Solve the dash curvature problem. Does the dash CURVE too much to nicely fit the FLAT screen? The screen can't sit flush with the dash, so will it look better recessed in or slightly sticking out at the top and bottom.
3) Practice mounting the screen. I don't want any screws showing, so I need to figure out how to firmly anchor the screen so it doesn't rattle or so that some thief can't quickly ****** it off. I may have to fabricate a metal or plastic brace to attach the screen to a sturdy point inside the dash.
4) Test using the plastic surround that comes with the headrest kit or visor kit. The surround might help me get more of a finished look.
5) Theft deterrence: if the screen is recessed in a little (there should be about 2 inches of space between the air bag and dash) I might be able to use the section that I cut out of the dash to cover the screen (for a stock appearence) when I'm parked in my apartment complex or at school. Maybe I could use small magnets (hopefully won't interfere with screen) or velcro to secure the cover piece.
I'll be starting this project soon (in less than 2 weeks or as soon as track down a dummy dashboard). I'm making sure to cover all 5 points in the process to ensure the project doesn't look ghetto or bootlegged. I will definately post a DIY as soon as it's done. All input, suggestions, and points that I forgot to raise will GREATLY be appreciated. I don't want to overlook a single thing. If someone here has already tackled this project or is planning to beat me to the punch, LET US KNOW and give us some information. I love my car, and I don't want to fu(k it up.
