It is connected inline with the power wire, and then grounded to the vehicle chassis. It serves no purpose in car audio other than to reduce, or in car with a small amp, stop headlight dimming. Technically it will smooth out "power ripples" in an electrical system, however an amplifier is a constant drain and therefor the capacitor can not keep up with the load, and in many cases can cause problems as the vehicle electrical system has to charge it constantly.
Here are some links explaining how they work.

Ya ludlam is right, Caps aren't worth a "bleep". A few yrs back i bought one thinking it would solve all my problems, after 3 months i sold it for $20 less than i bought if for to someone who knew less than me....
There is a ton of info out there about capacitors and when they should be used or not, don't believe everything you read, definitely search around the net for the answer to your questions, you'lll find out soem really good info in the process.....
untill then just like tfnaaf asked, what's the brand/model number of the amp/sub......how is is going to be hooked up (what ohm load etc)....car audio is fun, you can ask one question and to get the answer you want you need to ask 10 more questions, it doesn't get much better than this.
