Hooking up 10' sub to stock deck.
Hooking up 10' sub to stock deck.
Hey guys. I was wondering, I just got a 10' Clarion sub for my Acura 1.7 EL which all the audio components are the same as the 7th gen civic. I'm planning of hooking it up to the stock CD player. But, does our CD player have sub outs???(i'm guessing no....) If it doesn't and I go get one of those switches and hook it up will it sound distorted and sound like crap??? And also I really don't feel like gettin an aftermarket CD player...... just yet.
Thank you
Jeff

Our stock HUs don't have RCA outputs, but you can get a line level convertor, or, most likely, your amp will have speaker level inputs, then just splice your rear speaker wires and connect them to the amp.
hmm i was in your exact same position about a year ago. i got subs but i didnt wnat to get a new HU cus i figured why get a new HU cdplayer when i already have one. then i got tired of lookin at the ghetto direct line converter hookup in my trunk. it hangs there connected to the speakers wiht wires everywhere and it rattles. plus the sound was horribly muddy. i suggest u wait and get a HU first. it will be worth it. www.ikesound.com <-- havent bought anything from them but the prices are amazing.
If you use Line level converters - you will need to make sure the amp powering the sub has a built in crossover to control frequencies to the sub or you will need to purchase an external one.
Note - I have never used line level converters, so I can't attest to their quality. If you are leaning toward system improvements, a higher quality aftermarket deck will much better suit system expansion....

Well I had an entire setup and system in my car with everything BUT a HU. I used the stock headunit for a while with a 12" sub. It should sound just fine. I mean, the sound quality won't compare to a really nice aftermarket headunit, but it will still sound pretty decent if you do a good install. I used LOCs though to run to a 4-channel amp and a 2-channel amp to power all my speakers and subs and I got a lot of compliments on how my setup sounded considering I was on the stock headunit.
I would use Line Output Converters (LOCs). If you have a coupe you can tap into the rear speakers, and then hide the LOCs. Here's what I did. I folded down the rear seats. Then when you're sitting there looking into your open trunk from inside the car, look at the plastic panel that would be next to the seat when it is up. You should see a little door or flap that can pop off. I hid my LOCs in there and ran the wires to and from the trunk. If you play with that space you'll see that you can hide the wiring and make a clean looking install that way.
Hope this all helps!
