in-car sound question
in-car sound question
my friend has a rockford fosgate sub (12inch) with 1000 watt amp.
it bumps good considering his car is small too (integra gs). im looking for some added bass in my car as well, but i want the high quality sounding bass that comes with for example home theatre systems (like bose). i dont want all thump thump thump but i want more bass.
would getting a really high quality sub and amplifier achieve my wanting of high quality sounding bass, or would upgrading the actual speakers in the car do that?

I'm no expert, but if you are just looking for a tiny bit more bass and clarity without spending a lot of cash, just upgrade the 6x9's and get some component 6 1/2's with tweeters.
With my experience, a really high quality sub and amp will have much more bass and clarity, but will cost much more that components and 6x9's.

It depends on how much money you're really looking to spend. If you have the cash, maybe you'd want to consider getting an 8" JL Audio W7. Otherwise, maybe some type of 10" sub would be better. Possibly, some Pioneer Premiers, Eclipse, or MTX.
A high quality component system is very costly, although the sound quality you get is just unreal and can't even be compared to anything you've ever heard before, some good manufacturers are again, JL Audio (XR Series) and Boston Acoustics (Boston Rallys).

I dont really like bass excessively, but I got 2 Audiobahn 8"s anyway, and a Sony 1000 watt amp, and I really enjoy them. They're not working right now, and after only like a week of having them I miss them miserably! Get some subs, you can adjust them so that instead of booming excessively, they just take over the bass from the other speakers, allowing them to have more clarity on the other sounds. I spend around $300 on my entire setup.
amp - $200
2 used subs - $100
8 awg power kit - $30.

depends on how much you want to spend. for crisp bass, yet not real boomy, i would say go no bigger than a 10. for instance, a JL Audio 10W6v2 or JL 8w7, and a clean amp such as a JL 250/1 to power it. just make sure whatever you get is a clean amp, and a crisp, clean sub.

if u want good tight bass, then go with (2) 10's and u will only get the tight bass that u want by building the type of box that is needed. It's all about the box........go for a sealed box and build it the smallest u can that the specs allow for that particular sub.

8W7= waste of money IMO. you can get the same sound for a lot less. or get a much better sub for the same money. look at the IDQ10 by image dynamics (a sub built for sound quality) or maybe the 12 if you have room for a slightly larger enclosure and/or want a little lower sound. another one to look at is adire audio, a favorite on this forum. an eclipse aluminum, alpine type r, or maybe just a lower end JL sub like the w0 or w3. just some options.
you can get the same thing with one sub as 2, if you just want a quality sound. don't ask why, but it seems like 95% of people buy subs in twos.

Don't get me going on Bose (pronounced Blowz). Talk about overpriced and a marketing scam.
If you want more bass simply get a nice SQ sub in a sealed box. Almost any respected brand will do. I'd say in your case one 10" should add some nice thump to the system.
JL W3 series
JL W7 series (probably overkill)
IDQ10
Eclipse Aluminum
Diamond M6

I just replaced my Bazooka RS604 with the 10" Pioneer TS-W255C in a Q-Logic (sealed) box, and it sounds good. I'm not a big bass freak, either, and I'm happy with the amount of low end this setup provides. It's louder than the tube, and it's much crisper and tighter.
It wasn't hard on the wallet, either: $145.00 total from SoundDomain.

Enclosure plays a big part, and you don't necessairly want to just make the box the smallest size the specs call for, as it will affect the way certain frequencies sound. I have two 12W3v2's. They used to be in a .75 cube box (.75 each sub) and now are in a 1.2 cube box (each sub again) and the subs have almost the same tightness/SQ, however they now play the lower frequencies MUCH better.
What you should really do is go to a shop and listen to different subs till you find one you like.

i agree with mystic on this one, you shoudl really go to a shop and listen to determine the SQ you want coupled with the loudness you are wanting. but yeah, to add more volume and bass without getting too boomy, i'd stay with a 10 or smaller.
