can you put a remote start alarm in a standard?

I know of a few companies that do produce remote starts for manual transmission vehicles.

I have a Viper Responder alarm with remote start integerated...and I think I read that you can modify it to work on manuals.

Also, just as a possible heads up, I pulled this off a website...dont know if its true or not.

It does not harm the engine if installed properly and used properly. Manual should be the same, because the only difference is the clutch.

I was worried about the same thing when I got mine installed, but I use it all the time now. Fortunately, most remote starts include a lot of protection factors and monitors...checking the RPMs, Time running, Voltage, etc. Also, some remote starts, like mine, include a protection feature where you cannot double start the car with the key once its running. Just make sure you dont push down on the brake and THEN start the car with the key...trust me, it doesnt sound pretty...

I think someone posted something recently about remote start in a manual. Anyway, I have one in my car and I love it. I have a Clifford Avantguard4. The way it works is that you press a button on the remote right before you turn the key to the off position. Once this button is pressed, when you turn the key to "off" it'll leave your car running, like a turbo timer would. THen you get out of the car and arm it and the alarm will arm your car and turn the engine off. This ensures that your car is in neutral because if you're not in your car and your car is still running then obviously you aren't in gear. Check out www.clifford.com they don't make the AG4 anymore but they make a new one, AG5. This isn't the ony alarm they make that comes with remote start though.

Yes you can do it, but alot of shops will either not do it or make you sign some kind of waiver saying that it's your responsibility to not leave it in gear because the car will move if it's in gear probably a good 10 feet I've seen mine do it before after a friend drove my car. So if you do it be careful

if they are installing a remote start thats made for manuals they will not make you sign a waiver. If its installed PROPERLY in a manual it CANT start in gear.
I too have the avantguard 4 in my civic and the remote start works like this:

1 - you park, go into neutral, lift the e-brake, lift your feet from brakes & clutch...(there are sensors on both the e-brake and brake).
2 - you hit a button on the alarm remote, remove the key, and the engine stays running.
3 - exit and arm the car as usual, the engine turns off after its armed.
the end...fool proof. cant leave it in gear, cars not going to drive off when you remote start it.

If you disarm the car at any time you will have to redo the whole process, the same applies if the alarm is triggered, this is done just incase the alarm was bumped into gear.

Get a good brand remote starter...

All remote starts will work on manual.. HOWEVER.. only SOME have reserve mode (manual mode)... Reserve mode requires you to follow a sequence of steps before being able to remote start the car.. this ensures the car is not in gear.

I originally bought a piece of **** remote start alarm off the Internet... and I mean this thing was a REAL piece of ****... the remote start would ONLY work on automatic.. and it wouldn't even work fully on automatic. It would keep turning over and over.. Big hit on my starter... Anyways.. I threw that thing in the garbage and bought the DEI's Clifford Matrix RSX 3.5. I'll never look back at garbage in my life! Great system.. learned my tach immediately.

The Matrix series are intended for automatic cars only as they don't have reserve mode... however, if you install in manual.. just make sure you don't leave it in gear otherwise.. heh heh heh.. it'll start moving forward.

there exist a neutral sensor so only start when in neutral

Our civics don't have the neutral sensor wire if I don't remember wrong...

However, some cars have them.. some cars don't. Ours don't.
I will however double check when I get to work this morning.
