Finally got jacked
My other cherry got popped during the night of the huricane 2 days ago, first time my car was broken into and I came out of it feeling lucky because they only took my subs and just broke my driver side window.
I'll save explaining the emotional details of that night and move on to my point. I loved having two 12's ported in the back, sounded so tight and crisp for what were often called "boomy" subs in a "boomy" box. Thankfully I still have my 600.1 sub amp to work with and want to go ported again, I just dont know if I really need two subs instead of one. I know with cancellation theres a 3dB gain with a second one but with only one I gain trunk space and save money, so I'm just curious what everyone thinks one 12" (Kicker Comp VR) would sound being pushed with 600+ watts compared to two 12's sharing the same power. Thanks.

it depends on what you want. if you're looking for louder sound then obviously the two 12's would be what you want. I have one 12" nakamichi on on a naka 600 watt and it hits pretty nice. I would think two 12's would take up too much airspace but I could be wrong. How about two 12's on a 1200 ? hehe
Dual 4 ohm or dual 8 ohm sub?
If it's dual 4 ohm then the total load the amp would see with 2 of them is 4 ohms (parallel/series combo), meaning each sub gets about 150 watts. With one dual 4 ohm sub your sub will be getting the full 600 watts that the amp is capable of, meaning you've effectively quadrupled the power to the sub (from 150 watts to 600 watts RMS). Each time you double your amp power you gain 3dB. This means that by going from 2 subs (which adds 3dB to what you have with a single sub on the same power) You've gained 6 dB. AKA going from dual to single made it louder!
If you have dual 8 ohm subs your amp saw a total load of 2 ohms (everything wired in parallel). Meaning about 300 watts to each sub. By stepping down to a single dual 8 ohm sub the amp sees a 4 ohm load meaning the sub gets about 300 watts (the same power both subs were getting before). Going from 2 subs running on the same power to one sub on the same power means a loss of 3dB so you've lost 3dB by doing a single dual 8 ohm sub instead of 2 dual 8 ohm subs.
This is all correct assuming that your statement about gaining 3dB by going from one sub to 2 (which I'm not 100% sure i've heard before though it does sound familiar)
So as you can see it's all dependent on wether you do a dual 4 ohm or 8 ohm sub.
My head hurts after figuring all that out.

i hate theives, never had car stereo stolen, just 190 cd's, over ten which are nearly impossible to replace.

this time, secure your subs to something where it will be very difficult to steal such as rinning screws through the bottom of your box into the trunk floor. i had to learn the hard way as well.

yeah, after losing my first box (which cost around 250 for the single 10 enclosure, including having it sprayed with spray on bedliner) and the sub, i decided that the next time it would be a little different for the theif. I bolted mine through the new 3/4 inch mdf trunk floor and into the metal part of the trunk floor. they will have to take the sub out, which will also be hard because i also had a ring made to go over the mounting ring that has exactly 25 screws in it, plus the ones through the original mounting ring. and i also have 8 l-brackets in there securing the box to the mdf floor as well. it'd take them at least 10 minutes or so to figure out how to get it out, then actually do it. plus i installed an alarm(which ironically arrived the day after i got jacked). had it wired to the trunk pin as well. and adding motion sensors soon too. i also installed a very high pitched piezo horn inside that is deafening when the alarm goes off. hope to make it unbearable if they even get in the car. o, and i had a sleve made of stainless to surround the alarm wires, so they are a little harder to just cut.

I have our stupid factory security system that didn't go off untill 5 minutes after it happened, shopping around for an L7 and a new pager alarm as I type though. Appreciate the concern too, I have gotten over it faster then I thought but its mostly because he didn't steal anything else because I left everything in my car: wallet, HU face and all.

yeah, the people that broke in my car were idiots too, i had about $500 cash in the glovebox, and some miscellaneous cash stashed in a few other places. they only got the sub, and my amp, and the faceplate (thats right only the faceplate) off of my HU. they were truly morons that obviously weren't real criminals. bad thing is they ripped my leather in my car, from the glass shards lying in the seat, and them sitting on it. damned, illiterate amateurs.
don't play your music too loud near where you park. the guy who stole ur sub was prolly not a random jacking. he was prolly following u for a long time, hence he stole what he wanted; the sub, and not the money. thieves aren't stupid, they have everything planned out.
my friend plays his music super loud, and had ppl follow him over the freeway several times, until he drove to a shopping mall wher eit was crowded, and the guy drove off. he parks indoors as much as possible, or in populatd lots. i have a powerful sub, i turn my music completely off after i leave the freeway sometimes, when i'm driving near where i would park, cuz i park in some ghetto places.
u gotta learn from ur mistakes. don't play your music too loud, i believe that's what most ppl make their mistake

But as for your statement that thieves arn't stupid... the next night my sisters car was broken into and she doesnt have any mods or a system, but these idiots broke her window, road off, came back and parked beside it while the neighbor heard them calling a kid who was with them 'chicken' and pressuring him to try and steal it for a good two minutes because she came out and made them speed off.. so there are morons out there, but moron or not the next person who tries to mess with my car again gets his hands cut off if I catch him, I'm more afraid of what I do to whoever I catch then it ever happening again, I'm serious
