Building from scratch
I'm planning a new settup for my system and I'm thinking that I'm going to try my hand at fiberglass (I've read a lot, practiced a little and I think i'm ready to go). I just have a few basic questions about sub positions/facing that I was wondering if you guys could help me out with:
1) Will I get any bass in the cabin if the opening between the cabin and the trunk is sealed off, or is the back of the box?
2) If the subs are facing the back of the seats, with the seats backs up, will the bass be distorted badly?
3) I've seem pictures of subs where the body of the sub is sticking out of the box, and the face is IN the box.....can they really go either way? Can the body of the sub really be on the outside of a sealed box and still work properly?
That's it for now. Thanks!

fiberglss is definitely a fun way to do projects!
for box positioning, i have to reccommend agasint forward firing. in our cars, it just doesnt work right off the bat.
its not a matter of distortion, its amatter of cancellations. for whatever reason, theres destructive interferrence with the waves in a forward firing box.
now, the way to eliminate those cancellations IS to seal the back of the trunk. however, you cannot exclusively seal the trunk/cabin boundary. youve got the rear deck to worry about too.
its just lots of trouble, defnitely not a small project.
is reccommend jsut doing something of a rear or upfiring fiberglass box, you can make one thats real bitchin easy, i made this one in one day:

Thanks! I appreciate the info regarding that question....got any bits of expert goodness for the other two?
and just to clarify, closing off the opening behind the back of the backseats is NOT a problem? It wont muffle sound or anything?
Thanks again!!!!!

having the magnet stick out is called "invert mounting" its totally cool, its done all the time, and doesnt affect audible performance at all!
usually people who invert mount their woofers do so for aesthetic reasons...cause it looks cool!
as to closing the backseats, it certainly does muffle the sound a bit, you can tst that out right now. go out to yoru car, listen for awhile, then fold down te seats and listen again. but it wont be worse or better for any particular box position.
the only issue you might have to look out for if you do decide to forward fire your woofers, is whether or not the cone hits the back of the seat at full excursion. however, i gotta mention again that unless the trunk airspace is completely sealed off, yrou gonna get some cancellations, so i dont reccommend firing forward if you plan to build a simple box.
dont forget that rear deck!
and if you DO decide to embark upon this heavy project, I might suggest talking to custom2k1 about his method of sealing hte rear deck. from the way he described th eprocess to me, its alot more confusing and complicated than the way i did it, but in the end, physically easier to perform. gravity was on his side

Thank you, very much. I appreciate the help. Very good stuff.
I've decided against forword firing. I'm planning, now, on glassing in pretty much the entire trunk space.....may be a bitch to get out when i get a new car, but i just don't care about that right now. I'm really excited about the project.
I've also decided to paint this beast instead of carpet. I understand that the use of bondo and TON of sanding will be in order, but what kind of paint should I use? Spray paint i'm guessing, but do you have any particular brand that you use?
again, thanks for all the help.

id take it to a paint shop because you WILLLLLL sand for years, sepacially to get a shiny glossy finish....
if you do do spraypaint youll have to do a few layers with sanding in between and then a few layers of spray clearcoat with sanding in between.
i wouldnt go any cheaper than krylon spraypaint, but if you want some REALLY nice spraypaint, check out Belton and montana, theyre spray paint companies made especially for art so theyre nice and thick and have some GREAT colors...
ill find you links for belton later

lud is the paint man, ill use anything that gets in the way, as long as its the right color.
youll find, if you glass the trunk shut, that fiberglass is the far superior deadener than dynamat, foam, anything. fiberglass is some amazing stuff
