please help! amps keep dying
OK, my 1-month old Fosgate 801x just died last night in the middle of music playing. The bass just stopped playing all of the sudden, but the amp was not hot at all b/c it had only been playing for like 2 minutes. However, the amp did run really hot normally when it was playing on a normal basis. The fuse in line in the power cable is not blown, so that's not it.
I have 4 gauge power cable and ground cable, but I'm wondering if maybe my ground isn't good enough or something b/c i didn't grind it down where i grounded it. Would that make it run hotter? I've had 2 amps before this one die in the last couple of years, and I want to know if it is something in the wiring causing it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Did you check the fuses on the amp itself? Also, some amps tend to run hot which is usually not a problem. If you're worried about it running too hot, then consider the location you mount your amp. If it's somewhere with bad circulation or a place that tends to get warm in your car, then it is possible it will overheat. These are the only suggestions I can think of. Otherwise you might want to take it in for inspection/repair.
its tru that RF amps dont handle low impedance loads well but that will only cause the amp to go into protect, not kill it. I have a BD1500 in my car that isn't a fan of 1 Ohm but when I set it up that way to see what it would do, it just shuts down when you crank the volume (and dump loads of current into the speaker)

Amps have all been running at 4 ohm. However, I am using my gain about 80% up.
They have all been grounded to the pre-drilled holes in that little pertruding (sp?) metal bar that separates the trunk f/ the back seat area.
Next time i go home, i'm gonna grind the area down some first, but what should i use to do it?

sounds like you have your gain set to high.... I've never had my gain on any amp set more than half, usually around 1/3.. but thats because I always use head units with high voltage outputs..... remember the gain is not a volume control, but a level. Make sure you are setting it properly!
