subs turn off out of nowhere..

hey everyone
I have a problem with my subs.. while im driving sometimes suddenly turn off for no apparent reason. the neon lights and my sony amp's green light are still on but no bass. after i restart my car, the subs work again... what should i do? could this just be the not-so-great sony amp?

thx in advance

i had that same exact problem and the problem was the amp was faulty and it would draw too much current and shut off the signals to the subs automatically.. but im not sure if its the same problem.. =\.. hope it helped a little

is it an old amp? some old sony amps would let you run the gain up to the rail and then when they over heat and start to clip they will just shut off. When they do this they make a click noise.

hmm.. I dont know how old it is exactly... bought it almost a year ago and back then it was used for a little bit. It's that one that says 1000watts on it but doesn't really give me my 1000watts -_-...
but subs dont clip at all, they just suddenly turn off without any kind of warning. I'm running the subs with the gain all the way up maybe i should lower it?

if the subs aren't putting out any sound and the green light from the amp is turned on and seems to be working then one would assume that the amp is fine, and possibly there is a connection problem between the amp and the subs, possibly with the speaker wires, or possible the sub is broken. Back in the day when i had a $70 amp from radio shack and even cheaper speakers, my subs would cut in and out when my cheap a$$ subs were proken, there is a reason for everyting, and systematically trouble shooting the problem is the only way to find out, well maybe not cause sheer dumb luck works sometimes too. Try hooking something else up to the amp and see if it works, not saying hook up 6x9's with the amp still set to put out subwoofer type bass...but anyways.... adjust as necessary, but try to isolate what works to what does not work. hopefully this way you can find the problem

you say the gain is all the way up? maybe you should actually turn that down a bit and see if the problem still exists.....you may not notice that the subs are clipping when actually they may be, clipping is a lot harder to notice with subs as it is with higher frequency range speakers

it'll be hard to troubleshoot the system since it happens are random times... sometimes it happens when i've been driving for a lil time.. and sometimes it happens when i've been driving for a long time. So I dont know what happens. How much should i set my gain to? 50%ish?
