Also, simply mounting the drives vertically so that the heads don't hit the platters on bumps would be a good start.

Ok, now I have the computer issue mostly solved. The last thing I need to know is how can I power an ac inverter that I don't have to plug into my cigarette lighter in the front. I want to put the inverter underneath my seat with the computer. Any ideas????

You would get a DC.DC power supply and probably a voltage regulator too and it wires into any ignition hot wire you want to use. The best solution would be to get a low heat motherboard that either didn't require a fan or requires a tiny fan for the CPU. Low heat because they are designed to run on DC power. Then, you could simply grab a DC.DC cableless plug-in power supply, 200watts and a regulator for like $60 for both. If you are going to build a carputer, I can't stress to you enough to check out the new Mini-ITX line by VIA. Built on EPIA. THey are soooo small, low heat and some have embedded CPUs which is awesome. I think they even make a VIA Mini 1000 that has a 1ghz cpu, low heat. That's what you want.

i would say get a opus power supply. They are supposely the best power supply for the car. It is a power supply with a built in shut down controller. The bad thing bout this power supply is that its probably more than double the price of the other dc power supplies that you have to buy a regulator and shut down controller . My friend has one and it works great, but havnen't had time to install mine though . you can find the opus here

as far as quality, I have no idea who makes the highest quality inverters. I can tell you however, that designs made by Tripp Lite are far superior to that of Opus.
