Question Can someone tell me what part this is??

I was taking apart the steering column today and a piece of something fell out. Looks like it was from the old steering wheel assembly or something. I have an aftermarket wheel now. I didn't put it in so I am thinking they left this in here. Anyone know what piece this is, or where it comes off of?

Looks like it was part of the clock spring mechanism that helps the wheel return to center.

heres the pics

Exclamation Actually..

I think I just discovered what it was. It was the part that went on the stock steering wheel that clicked the turn signal off when the wheel is turned one way or the other. There are little tabs on the side of the part which would indicate that it would hit the lever. So it makes sense now because when I turn, the signal stays on unless I switch it off.

That makes sense. Glad you figured that out. I couldn't find it in the diagrams.

i'd go back to the person who installed the wheel and ask them why it's not installed. maybe it didn't fit with the new wheel, but the new one should have come with a replacement piece for that purpose. they should then install it so your signal works right.

Yup, that's what that is. I've had to replace them in other cars that I owned, they wear out and don't work after a while. It should go between the wheel hub and the back of the wheel. If it wasn't installed, there's a good chance that it doesn't fit with your new wheel. But I would take it back and ask the guy who did it first. If it does fit, he has to take the hub adapter off and install that, then put the adapter back on, then install the wheel again.

Or you could leave it off, and drive around like all the elderly drivers around here. They drive for blocks with their signal light flashing, indicating that sometime later that day, they will eventually be turning left or right, eventually.

I hate when people do that.

Especially when they finally turn they go the opposite way.
