Drilling for new Pedals

I got a set of Sparco Racer pedals, and got the clutch and brake drilled and installed, the problem i'm running in to is the gas pedal, in my 02 civic it looks like the gas pedal is nothing more than a small steel pipe with a plastic pedal held on by a pin. Has anyone here installed a gas pedal and how did you go about drilling for it? The only 3 options i've come up with are

all of these i'd remove the plastic gas pedal first....

taking the pedal out and having it taken to a machine shop and having them drill the 3 holes - although i don't like this idea because wouldn't the pedal be pretty weak after this?

taking the pedal out and having the new pedal spot welded onto the gas pedal rod

or buying and making a new steel gas pedal that could be drilled for the pedal itself - seems really complicated and way out of my league

any comments would be great, thanks

in the second vertical groove from the left side of the pedal (closest to to the brake), mark the holes and drill.
You'll clear the pedal stock.

well the bolts make it all the way through and have a strong grip on the plastic itself? i was considering this but wasn't sure if when i press down on the pedal it would have a tendancy to break the plastic or not

I haven't had any problems at all. All the screws are doing is holding the pedal in place. when you hit the pedal, the entire pedal is going to press on the the existing plastic plate. You shouldn't create enough force by stepping on the gas to break the plastic.

Thumbs up Sparco Stripe Pedals

Hey,

I'm new to this forum i just moved here from HStuners.com. I came looking for a way to install the same kind of pedals and I also hit the same problem. What i ended up doing was simple. All you do is relaease the accelerator cable just but pulling it off the top of the steel bar. undo the two nuts and the assembly is free. then i just hammered out the little pin. Now all you need to do is use a basic drill press. Luckily we had one in our garage but if you dont' have one just find your local fix it shop. Now lastly when i drilled the mount onto the steel bar it flattened out so the curve of the gas pedal was gone. It still mounted ok but the rubber layer behind was sinking in. (If you have a rubber layer in your pedals) just get some aquaseal and mold a piece to the size of the gap. I'll try to get some pics up soon...

Goodluck
