EGT Gauge?

Is there an actual need for an EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp) gauge? I was under the impression that an EGT is mainly used to indirectly tell you if you you are running lean or rich based on the temp. But if I have an Air:Fuel gauge, is an EGT gauge necessary? I ask because I was looking at some cars around the internet and a fair amount have EGT gauges. Does it serve another purpose?

It's pretty much a relic. It's good for tuning the air/fuel ratio at wide open throttle. Nothing more. Same for the air/fuel guage. Even the good ones (like Autometer) aren't really accurate at anything but wide open throttle. You need a wideband O2 sensor to get the best reading of your air/fuel ratio. That's what you tune the air/fuel ratio with.

The necessary guages for say a turbo would be oil temp (to make sure it doesn't get too high and cake up the inside of the turbo and get past seals and so on), boost guages (needed to see what boost you're running, duh!), and air/fuel ratio with a wideband O2 sensor. The ones like the autometer are okay for riding with I guess, but should never be used to tune.

So it's not something to actually buy then? They just use it on a dyno to tune the fuel map? Unless you get like the AEM EMS. It has an optional EGT sensor that simultaneously tunes the Air/Fuel Ratio.
Thanks
