I am an idiot. I purchased my car about a year ago... and to save money for my performance garb. I hesitated in getting AC with my vehicle. Now I hate myself in the summer without it. Is there a way that I can get an AC setup without the factory cost? Is this something I can do myself, or should I consult. Can anyone help this moron without AC.
I was quoted 1000 for a factory install including labor. OOOOOuuch!

There are aftermarket places that can install AC. Just make sure you scrutinize the shop you take it to. Be certain they are reputable and will back up their work.

er... the DX doesn't have the AC guys.

heh. it does save on performance, a DX is faster than a LX anyday of the weak. transmissino for transmission anyway.

AC puts on weight.. and well when its used..

but yeah, thats a bummer. dealer charges u like a grand for the option. heh. or close to it.

junk yard and shop is best place IMO. buy it from a junk yard and take it to a reputable shop that will back up their work.

shop around.

dont go to the dealer, they WILL charge you, especially for an item like this.

I'd say a Civic without A/C would only run ya maybe $9,000 (for a DX) & I'd think you'd have to special order that car. No dealer would order a Civic for their stock without A/C I wouldn't think. My advice is to bite the bullet & put the factory A/C in your car, you'll be thankful for it later. When you put an aftermarket A/C in there you run the risk of it not looking just right or having problems with it in regards to the rest of your car. Just go with the factory A/C & learn from this mistake.

yeah i know someone with a 00 dx hatch and actually got a/c installed recently...he paid less than a grand...aftermarket

i have a dx, and on the lot, it did not have a/c, but the only way they would give us the car for 10,988 is if we got the a/c with it, and we had to pay about 950 bucks for it. basically, every dx on the lot did not have a/c.

By the way... I have an HX and it cost around13500 and comes with an EX Vtec engine. So for those who wonder why I bought without AC, it was for the VTEC, so BLOW ME![IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif[/IMG]

My DX came with AC. There were only 2 Civics on the lot, early in 2000. If I had the money for the EX, I would have bought it. But I only had enough to pay my junky DX in full.

BTW, Not everyone will find use for AC. Quite a couple of members here live in Canada, where it's not very hot often.

Damn... if you think it comes with the EX VTEC engine... you really screwed yourself. The engines ARE NOT the same. So you buying it for the fabled VTEC is also worthless. The HX head adds like 2 HP over the non variable timed engine, and its a lean burn. The engine is not the same. If you wanted anything worthwhile for VTEC... You should have bought a car with a DOHC VTEC system (Integra, 99-00 Si, or RSX Type-S). Single cam VTEC is for effeciency not huge power.

got the wrong car then. VTEC in that car is hardly for performance. its for fuel economy, nothing more. in fact, a stock DX might be able to take out an HX. I dont think the HX's gearing is for performance....

in either case refer to post above, says clearly that that the engines are diff.

and for the last time, not all models of the civic has air conditioning.

AC can be an option, just like foglights, or spoiler. it's doesn't have to be mandatory in the car. It just so happens, the car on the lot or the one he chose didn't have AC.

btw the EX, which has a/c, also comes with vtec.. so you can't really say you didnt buy the car with a/c because of "the VTEC".

the HX does not come with standard a/c, and it does have VTEC-E (not VTEC [IMG]i/expressions/moon.gif[/IMG] ) but neither does the non-VTEC DX. the LX does come with standard a/c, and the same motor as the DX. and also, $1000 seems quite reasonable to have a factory-installed air conditioning system that will be warrantied by your dealer. you may even be able to talk them down a bit, ask them to lower the price since you bought the car from them, in "good faith".

what parts actually consist of the air conditioning unit in a civic? maybe someone can put together a list, and u can go to a junk yard and look for a vic with a/c and pull all of those parts out, and maybe make it some sort of a diy project if you dnt feel like spending the grand the dealership is asking for, and if you dnt wanna go with aftermarket a/c because you are scared of the reliability? i dnt know, just an idea to throw out there its possible.........good luck [IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/IMG]
