muffler question
I currently have a cold air intake on my 02 ex coupe. Will adding a univeral muffler give me any performance boost? Will it sound nice? Thanks for your responses my people!

its gonna sound really trashy. what you want to do is take a hammer and crush some of your exhaust pipes. you can also try making your muffler outlet pipe smaller by putting some pressure (close a fist on it) on it while its hot (after driving for a while). After you do this, your car will sound like no other! Domestics are gonna question themselves if they try and race you.

anyway to answer your question yea itll give you a small amount of HP gain but not much if i were you tho i would save up for a full catback system itll give you more of a HP gain and a better sound
It might give you a couple spare hp 2 or 3 if you just replace the muffler. btw it wont sound like unmufflered chainsaw if you leave the resonator on. i got custom header back exhaust with a universal muffler and had my resonator piped back in and it has a low rumbling sound that doesnt crackle and doesnt stand out alot.

geez, be easy on him guys. I was once like him...
Adding a muffler doesn't do much performance wise. However, it will give you a some sound.... now it's up to you to pick what kind of muffler you want. For deep sound go with the N1 style...
I still recommend you buy a full bolt-on exhaust because...
1. You can remove it whenever you want (mufflers are welded, stuck there unless you cut it out...)
2. Mandrel piping (mufflers dont include the piping....but you can get it at any muffler shop. Bad things it's crush bent, air flow isn't great....mandrel is smooth inside)
3. They typically sound a lot better
4. You gain like 1-2hp (Civics are just like that...not a lot of gains)
5. Higher quality material
In short, save money and buy yourself either a Magnaflow exhaust (realllly quiet), DC TCS (expensive, but i heard it has a nice sound), or some other full exhaust system.
You can hear muffler/exhaust clips here
I hope this answers your question...

I have a question since jrock brought it up. Is it possible to get a nice deep yet quite sound from a muffler and custom piping??? I am not looking for hp gains, but i want it to sound like a DC Sports TCS or Magnaflow. And if this is possible what muffler do you suggest???
Joel
PS. I dont want to have to use a silencer to have it be quiet.

If you wanna be cheap do this:
1. Get the "N1 style" muffler from ebay $65-75
2. Get 2.25" custom piping $45-100 (Mandrel is more...)
3. Get an 14-18" long resonator (without it, your exhaust will sound way too loud. Resonators control airflow) $35-60
Currently ihave a Magnaflow + 2.25" custom piping + resonator. Sounds pretty quiet, a little too quiet.... Magnaflows are known for being close to stock quiet. heh

It will sound like a pissed off weedeater. You can tell when someone has a good cat-back and when someone has a muffler. I thought about just getting a muffler for looks until i could afford a catback about 4 months ago. But i figured about 100 for a decent muffler and then 25 to get it welded on. Why don't I just save it for a couple of months and get a cat-back. I think there is still a group buy on the magnaflow, check it out in the group buy section.
Hey Jrock, instead of getting a muffler, I would just get an axle back/rear section exhaust for now. You can find em pretty cheap if you look around, try using the Parts section, or better yet, get one off Ebay for even cheaper. There are a ton of them being sold all the time. This way, for about 50 bucks more you can just unbolt your stock rear section (basically the muffller and the two feet or so of piping that connects to your stock midsection).
I first got an axle back, mainly because I wasnt into performance. I didnt even feel the gain, probably because it was only like 2 or 3 hp maximum. I then later got a midsection to complete the full cat back, but now I need a header with hi flow cat to make it fit because the midsection is for an EX and I have a DX. With a full cat back, you will feel a gain for sure, but even wirth it, our Civics dont really mature too much with em.
My opinion, just save up and get the full cat back, you will be more satisfied with your purchase.
