The key word is self contained

No RPM module ($92.90 from AutoMeter PN#5310)
No RPM "pill" kit ($35 from Autometer PN# 5358)
And then the cost of the shiftlight ($55.50 from Autometer PN# 5330)
For a total of $183.40

Or the "self contained version for $114 (PN# 114)
Plus the pill kit for $35 (PN# 5358)
For a total of $149

im being serious...i could try making on using some transistors and a couple of ic chips.

Looks nice. I think I would benefit from a shift light. They could have covered the LED's with some sort of lense though.
I don't know... Sometimes being small is not a good thing. I'm not liking the way it looks inside the cars. It seems like people don't know where the hell to put it. I think I would drill out a hole and just have the tip peek out from somewhere...
