What's an A/F Gauge for?
I know it measures the mixture of Air to Fuel. Thanks.
But how does it work? Does the light go back and forth like in the example photo autometer has? Or does it just stay in one place based on your mixture. What warrants needing to install one? Is it ever like "oh crap thanks to my A/F gauge I knew my mixture was off and I saved my engine!" or is it only necessary if you have Turbo.
Thanks guys,

Well it depends on what kind of car you have, but most the the times it goes up and down. When you're just cruising it goes down, but when you gas the car it goes back up.
It isn't necessary on a stock NA Civic, but it's a good investment if you add a turbo, or nitrous, or go into some heavy NAing. But it dosen't hurt to have.

if you're cruising at say half throttle, or idling, the meter will always be jumping back and forth. the reason is that the oxygen sensor in the exhaust senses how much oxygen is in the exhaust and therefore infers what the mixture is doing. if the mixture is too rich, it will lean it out, and vice versa. since conditions are always changing, a set number for the mixture can never be reached, so it bounces back and forth. when coasting at completely closed throttle, there is no mixture so the gauge (mine at least) shuts off till you give it gas or go back to idling. the one other time it is static is if you're at wide open throttle, at which point the mixture goes full rich and the gauge reads accordingly.
as said before, it's not real necessary on N/A cars, just looks cool, but can be useful in FI applications.
