short shift adapter install question

I installed my dc sports shift adapter today and I can't get the OEM spacer to fit and have the cotter pin go in. Is the spacer necessary? It works fine without it but if it is necessary I will make it fit. Please let me know....thanks.

anyone else try the link for the DIY short throw shift install and find it doesn't work? anyone know where I can access it? it would be cool if it was on this site instead of linked to that other message board where it used to be. btw, is it a pain diy to just change the shift **** (e.g. do you have to take off the center console, etc., or does the **** part just unscrew or something?)?

no just pull the leather boot down and then unscrew simple as that .. thinking about getting a short shifter myself but trying to decide if it's worth the money or not. .. I know what it does but doe it really make that much of a difference??
