police scanner
no, not for that purpose. its to watch traffic conditions, etc. a friend of mine had one in his cherokee for a long time and he used to be able to monitor traffic conditions, the occasional speed traps, etc. saved him a lot of trouble and it was small enough that it was mounted inside his glove box so it was out of site when he didnt need it.

its not illegal to own and operate a police scanner. the freq's are publicly listed.
Pay attention ... he typed scanners are NOT illegal.... I still don't understand the need to have one in your car... makes me think you are up to no good if you are scanning police frequencies
along the same line...
On my way to work today I saw a kid standing by the side of the road with a sign that said "SLOW DOWN Cop running radar ahead!"
So obviously I slowed down. And guess what... there was a cop running radar. A couple of blocks away another kid had a sign that said "You are welcome Donations accepted"
I was like WOW these are some smart kids.

well, first off, make sure that you can get your cities frequency. he around detroit they all changed to some new system that nobody can pic up with scanners.
as for having a scanner and thinking they are up to no good: i know a few people with them and they just have them to see what is going on, especially in a small community, and when something goes down and they are close they just go by the scene to be nosy.

It was my understanding that the scanner as it comes stock is no problem.
It's the alterations made after the fact that chip/capacitor thing they do that lets you get more/diff freqs or something. I had this explained many years ago by a guy who was retired Oklahoma Highway patrol. He said something about hacks that allow it to hear private police/fire/emergency channels, as well as more cell phones. (I dunno if the cell phone thing is still valid, as this was literally back when cell phones were $1000 and up and mounted into your car)
I've never had a scanner before, but they always sounded cool to listen to what was going on around town and such.

Scanners are illegal to have in cars in some states. For instance, it is a misdemeanor, a crime, to have one in your vehicle in New York State. Check the legality before you go and put one in your car.

Sometimes I will view some street race's, and I like to get ahead of the cops and get out of there so I dont get bothered. Also I drive the MA turnpike pike everyday (80 miles each way), so if there is a traffic hazard of some type, I would like to know ahead of time. Nothing worse comming over a hill and finding all triffic is at a dead stop

It's still illegal, even if you aren't a resident of the state, you still have to(suposed to, anyways) obey all traffic laws.
As for your icon comment, I think it's offensive.

Thank you for telling me that scanners are not illegal, but any event it is in my state as per the vehicle and traffic code and I will gladly confiscate it and issue a desk appearance ticket to the holder of one in a vehicle.
