You can put in what ever you want...5-20 is just what Honda recommends....

the motor is tuned for 5W30, tuned as in emissions, fuel mileage, etc. you can use a heavier oil, but it will have a slight affect on how efficiently the motor performs, u prolly wont be able to tell, but its like wearing leather pants as opposed to jogging shorts

civicdude will become famous soon enough
I was told by Honda and a few other mechanics that the car can only take 5w30. If you use a thicker oil, you will have problems with your motor. Im not sure if they are just trying to scare you so that you will come to them for oil changes or if it is true. I bought a case of Penzoil 5w20, and im doing it myself from now on. Does anyone make 5w20 synthetic oil??

Castrol 5w-20 here.....22,000 miles...no problems so far. Don't waste your money buying Honda oil....or there crappy filters. Just another scam to get more money out of consumers.

I think honda oil and oil filters are actually made by Kendall. Not 100% sure, but does anyone else know?

IDQcivic should not be trusted
I use Castrol GTX 5w20 too, I've heard to stay away from penzoil as it can ruin engines, no experience, just rumors....

I think I am going to start changing the oil myself as well.

Do you know where one can get the AMSOIL from??

If you ask me, all the different brands are pretty much the same. I had an accord that the egr valves got clogged on. It set off one of the lights on the dash and I mistakely thought is was the oil light. Dealer thought engine was filled with sludge from not changing the oil. They opened her up and called me to say that my engine was the cleanest they had ever seen for the mileage. It had 100k on it at the time and I always used Penzoil every 3-5k. Every other change I had the shop run the oil system cleaner through the engine though. Anyhow, she had 150k when I got rid of her. Motor still purred like a kitten.
