How to remove shift boot from shift ****? NOOB question

OK noob question. WHen I unscrew the shift **** the shift boot turns with it. So to replace my shift **** do I take out the console and then remove the shift boot and then unscrew it, or what's the order of things I should do?

push down the plastic piece directly under the shift **** and above the shift boot leather. it might be pretty strong. just push really hard.
