hi there
i have a 2007 honda civic with a 1800 engine.
every 8000kms i have to add a litre of oil. my local honda dealer says this is perfectly normal for a brand new honda with an 1800 engine. quite honestly i think this seems ridiculous. i have had several new cars over the years and i never have had to add oil between 15,000kms servicing.
please can yo kindly let me know if this is normal?

I see nothing unreasonable with it burning a liter over that distance. You should be changing your oil at that point anyways (for you americans... 8K kms is ~5K miles).

sorry folks,
i should have been more accurate in my infomation.
i have a 2007 honda civic sedan.
it has a 1.8 liter engine giving 140 horsepower.
HONDA requires the care to be serviced every 10,000 miles.
My problem is that every 5,000 miles i have to add 1 litre of engine oil. this seems extreme to me. all my previous cars never required me to add oil in between servicing. renault, toyota, Hyundai.
My friends say there is something wrong with the engine , as most engines do not need oil to be added or changed until you have driven 10,000 miles.
as i said previously, Honda says the 1.8 litre is sophisticated and adding one litre of oil for every 5,000 miles is the norm in a car like this.
I hope i am now clearer.
thanks in advance for your help

Honda may "require" service every 10,000 miles, but if you want the car to last any significant period of time, you should be doing it every 5,000. By that point, oil is usually done, after that, you're just accelerating wear on the engine.
The oil gets thinner as the miles rack up, which decreases its ability to coat and protect the surfaces in the engine. Without good oil, those parts (bearings and cylinder walls most notably) will wear faster. With larger clearances, oil is going to get places it shouldnt go, and running old, thin oil is just going to cause more problems.
Change your oil every 5000 miles. Going 10K is wearing the clearances in the engine... causing the engine to eat oil.
The factory service interval is a BARE MINIMUM. Nothing more. Consider it a suggestion, not a requirement.
Whatever damage thats been done is done. The only thing you can do now is stop it from getting worse.
A quart every 5K isnt too bad. Most manufacturers dont see a problem until you eat a quart or more every 1000 miles.
