How risky? Cold Air Intake

Guys, i was going to get a cold air intake, but my friend told me even with the bypass valve it might suck up water when raining, what are the odds of that hapenning and what can happen to my car if it does, should i get a regular intake?

i know ur not dumb enough to drive into a pool of water. puddle maybe but pool, no. the bypass should be enough to ease your mind about hydrolock

with the bypass valve it shouldnt happen unless you do something extremely stupid.. i.e. drive in a river. but if you you did, you would need a new engine

hey do a search, because i asked teh same question b4 i got a injen cai and now i got it, not sure who was helping me but a couple of ppl were very sure that you don't even need a bypass, even if it rains and crap, you just have to make sure you don't drive through a puddle of water, or if it is snow, bumper high snow for like a pretty long distance. so as someone told me b4, bypass is nice but you don't need it

Hey, I've got the AEM CAI without a bypass valve. Actually I have a bypass valve but I never put it on. After installing the the CAI and seeing where the filter is, the only way the filter will get completly submerged is if you are in water deep enough to get into the interior of the car. I've had mine on for a few months, and I commute from Lewisville to Denton three times a week, rain or shine. Hope this helps.

NO you dont need a bypass valve unless the intake filter gets submerged in water... if it does happen you're in trouble anyways...

i also have an aem cai, and i also ordered the bypass valve but decided not to put it on, they were telling me that you end up losing some hp and the car will sound stock after a certain rpm not sure when. i live in south fl so down here in rains hard and nothing has happeded, also just be safe in the rain like everyone else says, if u dont see the curb on a flooded street chances are its too deep.

Why would you ever want to clip it off?

well, actually, it doesn't just clip on and off. you would have to loosen the tightening rings and swap the rubber gasket w/ the bypass valve an vice versa. as for needing it, unles you live in lowlands w/ a high risk of driving through huge pools of water, don't worry bout it, you don't need it, but as some say, better safe than sorry. i have also heard you lose an eensy weensy bit of power, but not sure if that's true. i've had mine on for almost a year now, w/ no bypass and no probs. you should however clean or change your filter periodically

Look where the filter mounts....you have to drive into water deep enough to submerge that sucker.

I don't think the valve will function and less a lot of water were to enter the pipe. I think the valve works by closing off the pipe when enough suction pulls it into the pipe. (does that make any sense?) So, the pipe would basically have to be sucking up a ton of water in order for the valve to close. This isn't going to happen from a small puddle splash or the rain.

the intake dosnt really give you that much to begin with.. if your that concerened with gettin 4 hp instead of 5 (dont think they even give you 5)... dont get the valve....

AEM def dont need valve... injen.. might think about the valve if your in the situation below

however... if you live in an area.. where standing water can build up quickly during a storm... due to traffic you may not be able to avoid big puddels on occasion....

but if your really that worried about it dont get an intake at all.. an put that money towards header or something
