shift *****???

ok, i know that there have been a ton of threads about shift *****. i just wanted to know a few basic things without having to search through every thread to find the answer. other than looks, do they actually do anything for your car? i've also heard alot about short shifters. what is the benefit of short shifters, does it just give a better feel? also, if i wanted a quality shift **** for my car, what price range would i be looking at? thanks guys.

Short shifter=Reduces throw for quicker, easier shifts.
Heavy shifktnobs=provides the ultimate in positive shift engagement
New spoon shiftknob is very light, 17.5 grams. about $100+
Skunk2 weighted shifktnob,440 grams $50
I paid around $80 for momo shifktnob.
