What is the benifit of running synthetic oil over regular?

Synthetic oil has better protection properties against wear on your engine internals than regular oils. In a sentence, that's what it does.

Synthetic oil is much better at resisting breakdown under high temperatures / extreme conditions. You can also usually go longer between oil change intervals.
