I have a 2010 Honda Civic EX coupe with that "split" instrument panel. It's got a thermometer-like engine temp gauge to the left of the digital speedometer.

Normally, the bottom left third or bottom half of the engine temp gauge is lit up and the top right part is dark. But today, I was driving through a mild snowstorm and behold! The gauge had flipped upside down! The TOP RIGHT half of the gauge was lit up and the BOTTOM LEFT half was dark.

After a couple of minutes, I had a "blip" sound from the instrument panel, and the gauge had flipped rightside up again! Now as usual, the bottom left half of the gauge was lit up and the top right half was dark.

This happened again: The gauge flipped upside down and then it flipped rightside up again.

At no time was more than half the gauge lit up, and it was a cold snowy day here in MA, so I doubt that the engine is overheating.

What on earth is happening here?

Electronic glitch or display failing? Next time it flips, beat on the dash over the top of that gauge and see if anything happens

I've heard the gauge complaint before but this 'blip' sound you describe makes it interesting.... Was it the same tone or pitch as the warning beeper?

Likely the illumination of the gauge is intermittent. It can/will invert the display.

Whack the dash above and watch for changes in the symptoms.
