Hello all
I have a 96 honda civic with a D16Y5 SOHC, when ever I accelerate the enging pings a lot I've tried using higher octane fuels and it pings a little less but still pings I was wondering what can I do to stop it

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: 96 civic pinging
If you really have "ping" and not some other engine noise (many people have no idea what all the different noises sound like):
Check ignition timing.
If ignition timing is off by more than 10 degrees, stop. Don't turn the distributor. Pull the timing cover off and check the cam timing/timing belt timing first.
Stock engine?
Does it drink oil?

Now you need a service manual, a timing light, a way to jump the SCS, and some specs (specs may be on the emissions sticker).
Is your engine lacking power? Feels anemic? Has no ballz?

Re: 96 civic pinging
There's a difference between running right and running blatantly wrong. If you have never been in one that runs right, it might be hard to tell. It shouldn't have any problem keeping up with traffic though. If it were off by a tooth or more, I think it would have a tough time keeping up.
doing a timing belt water pump and service this weekend cos it's due for one but yeh So see if it is out of time before you pull it off (see if all the marks line up proper). Then correct it if it is out.
It would suck if it were out and you reinstall a brand-spankin-new belt out of time.

OK then, figure out why it misfires.
What did the old plugs look like? Were they coated in thick white ash (fouled)?
