Double with HDMI for nav question

Double with HDMI for nav question
Hey guys so I'm hooking up my double din today that has a hdmi input which could be used to mirror image your phone using Google maps essentially. In the manual it shows using an hdmi cable and an mhl connector for an android phone, what I'm wondering is if I HAVE to do it that way or if I can just use an hdmi chord with the other end being an android connection, I don't see the difference.
