amp fried?

can anyone answer this question?

what occurs when an amp gets fried?
the fuse off the battery blew and my amp shut off......for a split second my amp was smoking a little bit...I could smell it.....does this mean the amp got fried or can I jsut replace the fuse and have her power back up?....what are the chances it is still ok?.....the fuse should have blown (which it did)

Re: amp fried?

Many different things can happen when an amp "fries". In my opinion the most common issue is going to be over-current through a transistor which will destroy it. However, pretty much any other component internal to the amp could either stop working itself or become blown. Sometimes it can be something as simple as swapping out one bad component for another.

I would pull the amp from the car, and test it on a bench with a 12V supply of some sort. If it does start smoking on the bench she's probably toast.

Re: amp fried?

well i actually only fried one channel.. so i just gave it to a friend to power his sub. one side was enough to push a sub so he's just doing that.

you said fuse on battery blew? the inline fuse? is there not a fuse on the amp itself? i know i have a fuse from my battery into my amp, and 2 fuses on my amp so i should be ok (hopefully)

Re: amp fried?

JL 500/1 all the way. Probably the greatest amp ever made for multi use. Or like a alpine F-450. Its less expensive but if it was me i'd spend the extra and buy jl. Ive had 4 sets of subs and after gettin my JL's i'd never own anything else.

Re: amp fried?

well I opted to just send out my amp to be repaired by that company....being that the most it will cost me is 70-90 I figured why not!

Re: amp fried?

good idea but im gonna let this be a warning to a few people. This is not the first time ive heard of a rockford amp doing this. I know a few guys that their rockford amps just stop working one day. They blow easily. I dont know why but they do. Just thought I should put it out there that they aren't the greatest amps out there and I dont think it was all ur fault that it broke. It was probably a manufacturer's flaw in design.
